Ludwig van Beethoven (17701827)
Although
the last Beethoven commemorative year was some time ago, and the next anniversaries
will not occur for many years, Beethoven always remains the focus of attention
for a public interested in art and music.
Books about Beethoven are new in the Carus program. Beginning in January 2007
Carus will assume the distribution of the program published by Beethoven-Haus
Bonn. The great variety of publications encompass musicological studies on special
themes, general portrayals of the life and work of the composer, as well as
bibliophilic facsimile editions of Beethoven’s autographs. Most of these publications
originated in the Beethoven-Haus Bonn – an institution which developed around
the house in which Beethoven was born and which today has become the most important
Beethoven center in the world.

For experts and enthusiasts
In addition to the strictly musicological publications for specialists, a category
of popular musicological literature has been established which makes each research
topic accessible to a broader public. In this respect a small series of books
of various lengths have been written which illuminate the figure of Beethoven
in various aspects.
The musicological series
In the commemorative year of Beethoven’s 150th birthday in 1920, the Board of
the Association of Beethoven-Haus Bonn initiated a series of musicological publications
in order to promote Beethoven research. The series was given the name “Publications
of the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn” ten publications were printed by 1934. After
1945 the series was continued however, due to the conditions which existed following
the war, the words “new installment” were added to the name. In 1999, as a substitute
for Series II, which in the meantime had been discontinued, a fifth series of
Beethoven studies from Bonn was added.
