The sounding of the deep-toned bell of the Dresden Kreuzkirche links two of Mauersberger’s most moving works: the Dresdner Requiem, written in 1947/48 in memory of the victims of the Second World War, and the motet of mourning, Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst, composed following the bombing of Dresden on 13 February 1945.
