Sacred concertos - sheet music editions
In the 17th century the title “Konzert”, or concerto, did not just apply to instrumental works, but also to sacred musical works performed “concertante”. One such well-known group of works is the “Kleine geistliche Konzerte” by Heinrich Schütz; other composers who wrote in this genre were Andreas Hammerschmidt, Johann Hermann Schein, and Samuel Scheidt. The “sacred concertos” of the Russian orthodox church in the 18th and 19th centuries, by composers such as Sergey Rakhmaninov, form part of another tradition. Finally, in the 20th century, the genre name “geistliches Konzert” was revived in conscious imitation of the 17th century.
