Choral music for Reformation day

On the eve of 1 November 1517, the Feast of All Saints, Martin Luther is said to have nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, and with this gesture, initiated the Reformation. In 1667 Elector George II of Saxony ordered the 31st October to be celebrated as the day of nailing the theses and the commemoration day for the Reformation. It is still celebrated on this day in Germany and Austria, and in Switzerland Reformation Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in November. Since then, Martin Luther’s hymn “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” based on Psalm 46 has been used to end most church services on Reformation Day.
