Johann Sebastian Bach Joyful be, O ransomed flock

Cantata for the Feast of John the Baptist BWV 30 (BWV3 30.2), 1738(?)

Read and write feedback
The cantata Freue dich, erlöste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach’s last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John’s Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work.

    1 Coro

    Joyful be, O ransomed flock,
joyful be in Zion’s holy place!
Here you strive as never before
on a firm and righteous ground,
    and with blessings overflowing.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

    We rest in peace,
    the burden of the law
    is put aside
and nothing shall disturb our safety
    that our beloved fathers often
had sought, had longed for, and had hoped for.
    Come forth,
let all rejoice, and ever raise
our voices to our God a hymn of grateful thanks
    and with the heav’nly choir,
    yea, sing with joy together!

    Freue dich, erlöste Schar,
    freue dich in Sions Hütten!
    Dein Gedeihen hat itzund

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

    Wir haben Rast,
    und des Gesetzes Last

Nichts soll uns diese Ruhe stören,

The cantata Freue dich, erlöste Schar BWV 30 was prob ably composed for St. John the Baptist’s Day (24 June) in 1738 and thus is one of Bach’s last church cantatas. Except for the recitative and the chorale, it is a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau (Amiable Wiederau) BWV 30a which Bach composed to celebrate the acquisition of the Wiederau estate by its new owner Johann Christian von Hennicke on 29 September 1737. From this cantata – which was, commensurate with the occasion, a large-scale work (in two parts) for large forces – he took movements 1, 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12 and only adjusted the vocal parts to the newly underlaid text. For the instrumental setting, Bach resorted to the original parts of BWV 30a, in which he directly entered the necessary changes. He subsequently wrote a new score with the altered underlaid text, using both the score and the modified instrumental parts of BWV 30a as models. With regard to the instrumental setting, this score is therefore a reproduction of the most recent version. On the other hand, it served as a model for the newly written vocal parts and the supplementary organo part. The three-part
