Camille Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël

Christmas Oratorio op. 12

Read and write feedback

In 1858 Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Oratorio de Noël for five vocal soloists, mixed choir, strings, organ and harp. The work, sung in Latin, is based on texts from the Old and New Testaments, the Psalms and Gospels, as well as the Catholic Christmas liturgy. A distinctive chamber music-like instrumentation, with lyrical soloistic parts and a modest choral part combine to create a basic pastoral mood which has led this Christmas Oratorio to become one of the most performed works by Saint-Saëns. Carus offers this work both in its original version and in an arrangement in which the choir is accompanied solely by an organ.

Also available in a version for Choir & Organ (Carus 40.455/45).

Et pastores erant in regione eadem vigilantes,
et custodientes vigilias noctis super gregem suum.
Et ecce Angelus Domini stetit juxta illos,
    et claritas Dei circumfulsit illos,
    et timuerunt timore magno.
    Et dixit illis Angelus:
    Nolite timere!
Ecce enim evangelizo vobis gaudium magnum,
    quod erit omni populo:
quia natus est vobis hodie Christus
    Dominus in civitate David.

And there were shepherds in the same country
in the fields with their folds,
    guarding their flocks by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came to them
and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
    and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said to them:
    Do not fear!
Behold, I bring you tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people:
For unto you this day is born the Saviour
Christ the Lord, in the city of David.
And this shall be a sign to you:
You will find the child wrapped in swaddling clothes,
    lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of the heavenly host
    praising God and saying:

    und die Klarheit des Herren leuchtete um sie;
    und sie fürchteten sich sehr.
Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen:
    Fürchtet euch nicht!
Siehe, ich verkündige euch große Freude,
    die allem Volk widerfahren wird;

“A classicist in a modern epoch”
    Camille Saint-Saëns – Musique religieuse

When Camille Saint-Saëns died in Algiers in 1921 at the age of 86 he had outlived several epochs and stylistic changes in musical history. Despite the image of conservatism and awareness of tradition which remained with him, indeed partly because of it, the music-loving public regarded him – along with themore eccentric Berlioz – as a leading representative of 19th-century Musique française. His importance lay not only in his capacity as a composer, but also as a conductor and performer (as a pianist) of his own works, as well as an organist in churches of his native city Paris (Église Saint-Merri 1853–58, Église de la Madeleine 1858–77). Saint-Saëns was fully aware of the eclectic elements to his music, without this impairing its positive creative force.

Frequent questions about this work

The harp is only required in two movements. Can it be dispensed with completely?

The use of the harp is very limited, but that is why it is so effective. As the harp only doubles the organ in No. 5 in certain passages, it could be dispensed with there. In No. 7 the harp is central. If you nevertheless want to avoid using the harp, the organ can play this movement from the organ version 40.455/45; there the harp part is integrated into the organ writing.
Of course! For that there is the vocal score 40.455/53 and the chorus score 40.455/55 which only contain the German text, but which otherwise match the main version.
