Read and write feedback
Gottfried August Homilius left an extensive oeuvre. Numerous motets, church cantatas, and oratorios, among others, have been preserved. In their day the compositions of Homilius were very popular and were extraordinarily well circulated. On the occasion of his 300th anniversary Carus is releasing several CDs with works by “the best church composer” (J. F. Reichardt) of his time. The Handel Company and the Handel’s Company Choir under Rainer Johannes Homburg present five cantatas for Advent, New Year and Epiphany.

  • Gottfried August Homilius, the son of a pastor, was born in Rosenthal (Saxony) on 2 February 1714. In May 1735 he enrolled as a law student at Leipzig University. Likewise, it was probably at this time that Homilius was a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach; the latter fact had been attested to by Johann Adam Hiller. Apart from Bach, Homilius also had contact with Johann Schneider, a Bach pupil and organist at the Nicolaikirche, for whom he also substituted. After unsuccesfully applying for a post as organist in Bautzen, Homilius was appointed organist at the Dresden Frauenkirche in 1742. In 1755 Homilius succeeded Theodor Christlieb Reinhold as Kreuzkantor and music director of the three main churches in Dresden, a position that he occupied until his death on 2 June 1785. • Handel’s Company was founded in 1999 by Rainer Johannes Homburg and Harry Hoffmann. In 2011 the orchestra was joined by a choir: Handel’s Company Choir. The ensembles aim to present exemplary performances of early music works, especially sacred choral and orchestral music. This frequently includes newly-rediscovered works, principally from the 18th century. One natural precondition of their approach is to use instruments from the period in question, and to intensively research the appropriate performance conventions. Their creative work is characterized by successful and outstanding CD recordings: their Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer recording received an ECHO-Klassik award in 2008. Handel’s Company Choir and its partner orchestra Handel’s Company were reorganized following their artistic director Rainer Johannes Homburg’s move to Stuttgart and have been based in there since 2011. In its current line-up, the choir comprises voice teachers and advanced singers from the male voice choir of the Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben boys’ choir, augmented by professional choral singers. Reviews

… another fine addition to the Homilius discography.
Jonathan Woolf, www.musicweb-international.com, 19.03.2015

Tobias Bopp, magazin.klassik.kom, 05.03.2015

… sparkles with enthusiasm and glorious late high baroque gorgeousness …
ionarts.blogspot.com, best recordings of 2014, 28. Dezember 2014

Gustav Danzinger, Chor aktuell, Juni 2014

The disc devoted exclusively to his cantatas is very fine indeed, with a handful of impressive and nicely contrasted selections performed with great verve and style…
Fabrice Fitch, Gramophone, Juni 2014

Guy Engels, pizzicato.lu, 20. Mai 2014

…eine so homogene wie stilkundige Sängergruppe…
Reinhard Kriechbaum, Concerto, Mai/Juni 2014

Matthias Hengelbrock, Musik & Kirche, März/April 2014 (Nr. 2)

… entdeckenswert.
