Otto Nicolai: Messe Nr. 1 in D - Sheet music | Carus-Verlag

Otto Nicolai Messe Nr. 1 in D

Read and write feedback
The only surviving mass by Nicolai is a very important contribution to church music. It is characterized by its structural variety and its singability. At the same time it offers a genuine alternative to other settings of the Mass for worship services. The Carus Urtext edition renders the final Viennese version of this cheerful, festive mass.

… a composer of worthy sacred music

The composer Otto Nicolai, born in Königsberg, Prussia in 1810, was a Protestant through and through and served as a church musician in Prussia. Although he did feel a certain degree of sympathy towards the Catholic Church, a conversion was out of the question for him. What could have caused him to compose Catholic church music?

In the summer of 1832, Nicolai travelled to Poznań to meet with his father; it was their first meeting since the young Otto had fled from his father’s extremely harsh methods of education more than six years previously and made his way to Berlin. There, he had found a mentor in Carl Friedrich Zelter, who made it possible for him to study at the Königliches Institut für Kirchenmusik (Royal Church Music Institute). The reunion between

Ulrich Konrad, Die Tonkunst April 2012
