The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Maria was composed ca. 1758–1760, between the end of his tenure as a singer in the choir of St. Stephen’s in Vienna and the beginning of his first position as violinist and music director for the Bishop of Großwardein. The scoring of SATB (for soli as well as choir) and “church trio” was augmented by two trumpets (clarini) and timpani, as well as two trombones. The latter instruments double the alto and tenor voices in tutti passages but in the “Et incarnatus est” they are also employed in an obbligato role. On the one hand, as an early work this Mass is in the style of the festive baroque tradition, as practiced in south-German regions until the middle of the eighteenth century; on the other hand it already shows the subjective inspiration which distinguished it from many of the mass settings by Haydn’s contemporaries.

  • Johann Michael Haydn wirkte ab 1763 am renommierten geistlichen Fürstenhof in Salzburg. Stilistisch schlug er in seinem 43-jährigen dortigen Wirken die Brücke von der Frühklassik zum musikalischen Biedermeier. Entsprechend seinen dienstlichen Verpflichtungen hat Haydn praktisch zu allen in der katholischen Liturgie gepflegten Gattungen beigetragen: Das Wissen um die liturgische Funktion und die musikalische Ausdeutung der religiösen Texte zeichnet Haydns Kirchenmusik aus. Johann Michael Haydn wurde von den Zeitgenossen zunächst als gleichberechtigt neben Joseph Haydn gesehen. Erst der steile Aufstieg des älteren Bruders zum bedeutendsten Instrumentalkomponisten der Zeit rückte Johann Michael Haydn in den Schatten, aus dem ihn die musikalische Entdeckerfreude der letzten Jahre zunehmend herausholt. Etwas über 20 Jahre alt war Michael Haydn, als er die vorliegende Messe schrieb, und das merkt man dem Werk auch an: Michael Haydn war zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht der „große Komponist”, der er später zweifelsohne werden sollte. Auffällig die virtuose Behandlung der Solostimmen, aber auch der Chorpart ist nicht ohne (bedeutend schwieriger als in Mozart- Messen). [ ]
Die Orchesterbesetzung entspricht den damaligen Aufführungsgegebenheiten: zwei Violinen, Bc, zwei Trompeten und Pauken (zwei Posaunen verdoppeln die Alt- und Tenorstimmen, im „Et incarnatus” dann aber obligat eingesetzt). Eine - wie bei Carus immer - mustergültige Ausgabe. Anschaffung empfohlen.

Missa Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, Michael Haydn (1737-1806)

This early mass dates from about 1760 and retains the late-Baroque musical style; editor Charles Sherman points out the ”clumsy partwriting” of a young composer. The Gloria and Credo have incipits to be intoned. At limes the string parts are very busy with considerable ornamentation. Brass parts are sparse and used primarily for punctuation. The soli are used throughout the choral movements; there is a mixture of polyphonic and homophonic styles. (N.B. These Carus-Verlag editions are excellent with solid scholarly work and wonderful, clear manuscripts to read.)
