Francis of Assisi, the famous merchant's son and later founder of a religious order, has served as a source of inspiration from the most varied perspectives, and Damijan Mocnik has added to this tradition. The Slovenian composer and choral director composed a cantata in 2013 on the 25th anniversary of the Diocesan Grammar School in Ljubljana, based on the text of the famous Canticle of the Sun, and building on this, a complete setting of the ordinary of the mass as well (2014-16).

... Die geforderte Besetzung und die Dauer von rund 27 Minuten machen die «Missa Sancti Francisci Assisiensis» zu einer attraktiven Alternative zu den gängigen Messvertonungen im Gottesdienstgebrauch.

On 23 July 2022, we were able to perform the Missa Sancti Francisci Assisiensis by Damijan Mocnik. The effect of the work on the audience was overwhelming. The melodies and rhythms went straight to the heart. That's why people were happy, inspired and moved to tears! Standing ovations, two encores, a relaxed and convivial atmosphere at the drinks reception and ultimately enthusiastic choir and orchestra members as well as a percussionist who was "beamed into another world".

The mass can be recommended to any choir that simply wants to try something special and explore new sounds. As the mass is dedicated to St Francis, texts on the preservation of creation and unconditional commitment to peace can be aptly added. The work is by no means limited to the target group of "young singers" - it inspires across all generations. It's great that Carus-Verlag has included such a great work in its publishing programme.
