Homilius

Choral music by Gottfried August Homilius

In 1742 Gottfried August Homilius received his first appointment as organist at the Dresden Frauenkirche. Prior to this, whilst a law student in Leipzig, he was to be found in the circle of Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1755 he finally took up the position of Kantor at the Kreuzkirche and music director at the three main Dresden churches. The compositions of Homilius – including over 60 motets, 180 church cantatas, oratorios, at least nine settings of Passion music and many other vocal and organ works – were very popular and exceptionally widely-known in their day. The lexicographer Ernst Ludwig Gerber was of the opinion that Homilius was “without any argument our greatest church music composer”. The editions published by Carus are gradually making his extensive body of work available. Thanks to these, Homilius once again has a firm place in the musical repertoire.
