Piano music by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger
Josef Gabriel Rheinberger’s music for piano has long been overshadowed by his better known organ and choral works. Nevertheless Rheinberger was a brilliant virtuoso pianist, and piano music constitutes more than a quarter of his large creative output. Since his piano music has gradually been rediscovered in libraries, published in modern editions and, in some cases, recorded, its value has begun to be seen in a new light. Indeed, in its diversity, originality, virtuosity and ideological content Rheinberger’s piano music even surpasses his works for organ, although the piano music was unable to assert itself against the immensely powerful competition which existed in his day.
