Mendelssohn: Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein. carus music

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

O God, from heaven look on us

Chorale cantata

MWV A 13, 1832

Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein is one of eight chorale cantatas by Mendelssohn. He set all six verses of the hymn by Martin Luther. The chorale melody is heard for the first time in the cantata in the third verse. The particular challenge for the singers is the chromatic lines found throughout the entire opening chorus, as well as the quite different styles and moods in which Mendelssohn set the verses of the hymn.
