Even though it never attained the popularity of the Christmas Oratorio, Bach himself performed it four times during his lifetime. Some parts of the oratorio originated as parody movements from the birthday cantata "Entfliehet, verschwindet, entweichet, ihr Sorgen" for Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weißenfels. The second work on this CD, the Ascension oratorio "Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen" BWV 11 (1735) also goes back to another work, namely "Froher Tag, verlangte Stunde," a no longer extant cantata composed for the inauguration of the new St. Thomas’s School. In his recording, Frieder Bernius demonstrates at the highest level, that both these oratorios are masterpieces which do not need to hide behind their better known sibling works.

Elijah, Mendelssohn’s second great oratorio, was composed just a year before his premature death. This excitingly dramatic work also expresses a fervent belief in God, a belief which in the 19th century was no longer self-evident. Mendelssohn transposed the visible world of the Old Testament into numerous musical expressive possibilities in which Old Testament texts, including psalm texts and commentaries from the words of the Prophets, were shaped into biblical dramas. With Elijah Frieder Bernius continues the prizewinning CD series of Mendelssohn’s complete sacred works.

Originally conceived as a small oratorio or a large psalm-cantata, the combination of 3 symphonic movements with 12 vocal movements conformed to neither of these two genres; thus Mendelssohn called the work a “Sinfonie-Kantate.” In the course of the 20th century the unavoidable and, in part, negative comparisons to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony led to the Lobgesang being almost completely ignored. It is only in the last few decades, spurred on by the definitive impulse of Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart, that the work has come to be regarded as a successful example of the symphonic conception of Mendelssohn’s sacred music, in which he attempted to bridge the gap between church and concert hall.

Monumental Oratorio: Handel began work on Israel in Egypt just three days after he completed the oratorio Saul. He completed it in less than a month. He first performed the monumental work in April 1739 in the King's Theatre in Haymarket. He continually revised this work until 1758.

The version recorded here is in the three-part form as it was originally conceived by Handel. With two mixed choirs, which essentially relate most of the plot, and an unusually large orchestra, this large-proportioned oratorio has a special place in Handel's creative output.

In addition to the hand-picked soloists, above all, the Vocalensemble Rastatt and the Barockensemble Les Favorites are outstanding. Under the direction of Holger Speck these musicians portray most impressively the contrast-filled spectrum, ranging from expressive lament to the festive and triumphant jubilation of the Israelites.

Whereas the early masses were conceived more for practical performance in Schubert’s home town of Lichtenthal, because of their length, their level of technical difficulty, as well as the almost symphonic design, the later settings present a greater challenge. Actually, Schubert’s A flat Mass was composed in light of his ambitions to obtain the post of Assistant Music Director in Vienna. But Emperor Franz I preferred masses which were short and easy to perform – something which cannot be claimed for the A flat Mass.

This applies not only to the still unanswered question of why Bach composed but never performed this work, but also continues to the core of the musical text. Until his death, Bach himself repeatedly revised his Opus ultimum without ever leaving a final version. Directly after his death, the original manuscript was massively changed by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel; changes which, until today, pose many questions to researchers.

The present new recording rigorously follows – in the Kyrie and Gloria – Bach’s own meticulously configured “Dresdner Stimmen” [Dresden parts] and is thereby based, for the first time, exclusively on the musical text that emanated from Johann Sebastian Bach’s pen. Furthermore, additional movements with marked deviations from today’s familiar version have been made accessible as variants in the bonus material. The recording is based upon the new edition by the renowned Bach and Mozart scholar Ulrich Leisinger in cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, who also prepared the introduction in the CD booklet.

This Deluxe version contains, in addition to the CDs and a comprehensive booklet, a bonus DVD with additional material:
- Film: Bach’s Secret Legacy. Hans-Christoph Rademann in search of the true B-minor Mass
- Live Concert Recording: „Kyrie eleison I“, live in the Beethovensaal, Liederhalle Stuttgart (31 January 2015)
- Bach’s Manuscript: The “Dresden Parts“ of 1733 in PDF format

Awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik

Awarded the Pizzicato Supersonic Award

The Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the central sacred vocal compositions in the history of music. Hans-Christoph Rademann has now devoted his first CD as director of the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to this outstanding work and, together with the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as renowned soloists in the field of historically informed performance practice, has set new artistic standards.
Although the Mass in B minor is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most frequently performed vocal works, it continues to present performers and scientists with new enigmas and problems.

The recording is also released as a Deluxe version (Carus 83.315) which contains, in addition to the CDs and a comprehensive booklet, a bonus DVD with additional material:
- Film: Bach’s Secret Legacy. Hans-Christoph Rademann in search of the true B-minor Mass
- Live Concert Recording: „Kyrie eleison I“, live in the Beethovensaal, Liederhalle Stuttgart (31 January 2015)
- Bach’s Manuscript: The “Dresden Parts“ of 1733 in PDF format

Awarded the Preis der detuschen Schallplattenkritik

Awarded the Pizzicato Supersonic Award

This CD is distinguished both by the special sound and refinement of his ensembles – the Kammerchor and the Barockorchester Stuttgart, which has long enjoyed a outstanding reputation for historically informed performance practice – as well as by the select ensemble of soloists, including Carolyn Sampson, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Hulett and Peter Harvey. Carus continues its CDs series of works by George Frideric Handel with “Messiah,” his most famous oratorio. Handel composed the three-part work for the English royal family and gave it its first performance with much success in Dublin in 1742. “The sacred oratorio,” as contemporaries called it, combines elements of the English anthem, Italian oratorio, and even German Passion music. Already during Handel’s lifetime “Messiah” was among his most-often performed works and it achieved virtually cult status.

Joseph Haydn began work on the mass in 1766, when he assumed the position as Music Director for the princely Court of Esterházy. With its unusually large orchestra and a duration of almost one hour, this composition is the longest and most extensive of Haydn’s masses. Haydn followed the traditional structure by setting the parts of the Ordinary in individual movements, in which the text is interpreted through the use of variety and contrast in scoring and compositional technique. For quite some time now, Jos van Immerseel and his Ensemble Anima Eterna have enjoyed an outstanding reputation for presenting their unique and special type of historical performance practice: For the present recording they employed Vienna wind instruments and the string instruments are modeled on instruments from the Viennese classical period. In the unique acoustic setting of the Dresdner Frauenkirche their truly brilliant recording of the Missa Cellensis has initiated the Carus series of the complete masses of Joseph Haydn.

Simply calling it a “mass” is inaccurate; indeed, there is hardly more than a musical torso full of enigmas and problems – and brimming with magnificent music. What has survived is a fragment, in more ways than one. Mozart left the work unfinished; moreover parts of the autograph have been lost. Carus has now produced a new edition which is not only based upon a profound knowledge of Mozart’s music and the church music practice of that time, but also meets with the current demands of performance practice. Frieder Bernius is the co-editor of the sheet music edition; he and his Stuttgart Chamber Choir recorded this version on CD. The recording impresses not only by the outstanding musical quality, but also by the particularly noble equipment in a hardcover booklet. In addition to the new version of the mass, the CD also contains a bonustrack with the Credo fragment without completed instrumental parts. A true discovery!

His labor on the composition was long and intense; the work is not regarded as the most important mass setting of the 19th century in vain. In terms of its scope and musical demands, it reaches far beyond what is liturgically usual – not without reason did the premiere take place in a concert hall. The Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart under the leadership of Frieder Bernius master the challenges of the Missa with bravura. All the sonorous groups work together intensively, creating an organic and homogeneous flow of interpretation. The young quartet of soloists Johanna Winkel, Sophie Harmsen, Sebastian Kohlhepp and Arttu Kataja complement the ensembles.

This exclusive collection, designed by Friedrich Forssman and Cornelia Feyll, is presented in high-quality DigiPacs and each CD includes an extensive booklet.

The revival of Antonio Vivaldi’s music in the 20th century went hand in hand with the new discovery of a large amount of his sacred vocal music which ranged in repertoire from large-scale compositions for the Mass and Vesper to biblical oratorios and solo motets. The first revivals of Vivaldi's church music, including the Gloria and the Credo on the present recording, were received almost as a sensation. They clearly show that, just in the field of church music he attained some of his greatest artistic achievements.

Since the beginning of the Rheinberger Complete Edition at Carus, the printed music has been accompanied by a Rheinberger CD series (known as the "Musica sacra" Series). In 1988 "Der Stern von Bethlehem" op. 164 appeared not only as the first volume of the Rheinberger Complete Edition, but at the same time was also released on CD. And just one year later Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart won a German Record critics music prize for their interpretation of Cantus Missae op. 109, Abendlied op. 69,3 and other motets. The "Musica sacra" Series with many world premiere recordings is now available as a box set of 10 CDs. Renowned soloists and ensembles attest to these outstanding interpretations.
