In his Passion oratorio Christus am Ölberge [The Mount of Olives], Beethoven succeeded firstly in building on an 18th century tradition, but also in putting his own personal stamp on the nascent genre of German-language oratorio. In his composition he looked towards contemporary opera. Christus am Ölberge is therefore characterized less by religious devotion and much more by the dramatic realization of a specific situation in the Passion story in deeply-felt musical scenes.

Experience of singing Bach’s Passions only helps with this work to a limited extent: instead of chorales, here there are choruses of warriors and youths who interact in a dramatic scene; later there is a chorus of angels who rejoice, and as well as this, the text is new – let’s turn to the music, there is a lot to get to grips with!

Beethoven’s “Ninth” was hotly debated amongst listeners and music critics at first. But his setting of Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” in the final movement is now sung by classical music fans and many others as a matter of course. However, the catchy theme is deceptive, and the choral writing is in fact much more difficult than it looks. Dizzy heights and frequent contrasting tempo changes demand absolutely everything from the choral singer: here, every detail has to work, for this movement is ultimately the crowning conclusion of the 70-minute symphony.

Beethoven repeatedly described the Missa solemnis as his greatest work, intended to affect and move people. His labor on the composition was long and intense; the work is not regarded as the most important mass setting of the 19th century in vain. In terms of its scope and musical demands, it reaches far beyond what is liturgically usual – not without reason did the premiere take place in a concert hall. The Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Hofkapelle Stuttgart under the leadership of Frieder Bernius master the challenges of the Missa with bravura. All the sonorous groups work together intensively, creating an organic and homogeneous flow of interpretation. The young quartet of soloists Johanna Winkel, Sophie Harmsen, Sebastian Kohlhepp and Arttu Kataja complement the ensembles.
