Schütz’s Christmas History for soloists and six-part chorus (SSATTB) is an extremely vivid and palpable interpretation of the Christmas story. The musical setting of the words finds its highpoint in the central role of the evangelist, who embodies the idea of music related to the text like no other character; the chorus is also used in specific ways to add emotional depth to the text. Whilst the shepherds are portrayed in folk-like manner by touchingly simple musical means, the chorus of angels is characterized by rousing praise and joy. Common to all parts of the Christmas History is a lightness which, no matter how tangible and direct the music may be, presents every singer with a challenge.

The underlying recording was made using a historical tuning. It sounds approximately a semitone higher than our modern piano tuning.

The well-known Christmas History is supplemented with additional pieces for the Christmas season, including the Magnificat SWV 468. Under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann, the Dresdner Kammerchor and the Dresdner Barockorchester perform together with renowned soloists such as Gerlinde Sämann, Marie Luise Werneburg and Georg Poplutz (as Evangelist). Handel’s setting of Psalm 110, Dixit Dominus, is one of his first surviving works, composed at the age of just 22 during his three-year stay in Italy. In this large-scale work, he already displays an assured mastery in his treatment of chorus and orchestra; the obstacles for choral singers, who need to be extremely agile, should therefore not be underestimated. The numerous fugal or imitatively interwoven sections – the intertwined sixteenth note writing of "Tu es sacerdos", the initial entries in "Dominus a dextris", and the concluding "Et in saecula" section with its many octave leaps need to be thoroughly learnt.

A seventeenth century Passion “Radio Drama,” the sixth installment of the recording of Schütz’s complete works by the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann presents three powerful works for Passion. The St. Luke Passion SWV 480 unfolds a panorama inviting us to experience an intense, inward-looking pictorial reflection on Jesus’s Passion. The words of Luke the Evangelist are sung without accompaniment, the musical means skillfully reduced to a minimum. This narrative is interrupted by the choruses, creating dynamic emotional scenarios, clamoring, pleading, querying and raging: in this way, Schütz creates a form of Passion, a “radio drama” with a deeply moving intensification of events. The well-known “Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) SWV 478 is the first contribution of the viola da gamba player Hille Perl and her ensemble "The Sirius Viols" to the complete Schütz recording. The sophisticated structure of the work, the intense sensuality of the individual sections and the beauty of the musical message make the “Seven Last Words” a masterpiece. The third work on this CD, “Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott” (Have Mercy on me, O Lord God) SWV 447 for solo soprano accompanied by a consort of viols – a composition for the Good Friday service – represents a charming and appropriate complement to the “Seven Last Words”.

Heinrich Schütz is generally regarded as a master of the art of setting text to music, particularly the text of the Bible in its unaltered form which was of substantial significance to Lutheran doctrine. On the other hand, there are only few examples of settings of rhymed texts in Schütz's oeuvre. One of these is the so-called "Becker-Psalter," a collection of psalm translations by the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker. Shortly after the death of his wife, Schütz concentrated on this collection and set numerous verses to music. In the 15th volume of the Schütz Complete Recording, Hans-Christoph Rademann and his Dresdner Kammerchor present a colorful interpretation of a selection of these unusually unadorned, transparent, folk-like compositions. The cross-section of the CD is based on the selection of psalms that Schutz composed for his Psalms of David (Carus 83.255), thereby creating a sibling CD for these magnificent, multi-choral works.

In the complete works of Heinrich Schütz, performed by the Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann and produced by Carus, the fifth installment presents the Cantiones Sacrae (SWV 53–93). In 1625 – during the Thirty Years' War – Schütz published this collection as his opus 4. In the 40 Latin motets he used texts from the prayer book of Andreas Musculus, which is based on psalms and verses from the Song of Songs, as well as texts from the Gospels, devotional texts and various prayers. The fact that today these expressive prayers have not gained the popularity of Schütz's other great collections is due, not least, to the high demands which the composer places upon his performers. With the guiding principle "historically informed – interpreted today," Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Dresdner Kammerchor present precisely the lesser-known works of Schütz on the highest artistic level as an open invitation for new discovery. The recorded performance of the complete works of Schütz is being produced in cooperation with MDR Figaro.

In 2008 the concert and opera singer Cornelius Hauptmann initiated the charitable "The Lieder project" to further singing with children. The following year the "Wiegenlieder" (lullaby) collection was published. Once again, more than 50 singers have voluntarily, without remuneration, given their voices to sing the most beautiful German folk songs. This project will be continued with two further collections of children’s songs and songs for Christmas. The present collection of the most beautiful German folk songs is sung by leading concert and opera singers, choirs and children. The CDs each include an extensive booklet with colour illustrations and song texts with English translations. In January 2011 the benefit project "Lieder-Projekt" was awarded with the website www.liederprojekt.org als „Ausgewählter Ort 2011“ [selected spot] in the challenge „365 Orte im Land der Ideen“ from the German government.

When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schütz’s compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music, one of his most important works from the year 1648, is characterized by the carefully-thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo – it was his conviction that every young composer should obtain “the proper foundation for a good counterpoint.” In spite of the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the “Musicus poeticus” instilled his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ, according to content, in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones.

In honor of the 800th anniversary of the Schola Thomana Leipzig Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Dresdner Kammerchor present a complete recording of "Israelsbrünnlein" by Johann Hermann Schein, who was certainly the most important Thomaskantor prior to Johann Sebastian Bach. Israelsbrünnlein is the most significant motet collection in German music of the 17th century. Among the 26 pieces, composed in the "Italian-Madrigalische Manir" most of them are based on Old Testament texts, hence the name of the collection. Originally written for festive or solemn occasions, such as weddings, funerals or graduations, they unite madrigal style with the polyphonic art of sacred motets.

“Heinrich Schütz – The complete recording”: In the coming year a recording of the complete works of Heinrich Schütz under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann will be released on the Carus label. Together with the Dresdner Kammerchor and many renowned soloists these works, true to historical performance practice, will be presented. Thanks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schütz was able to pursue a three-year course of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo libro de Madrigali. Already in this, his Opus primus, Schütz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century. A coproduction with MDR Figaro.

As a composer Johann Adolf Hasse (1699–1783) was the uncontested idol of the late baroque era. Although today he is known primarily as an opera composer, he left behind numerous excellent sacred works. At last, the sacred music he composed for the court of Dresden is being made accessible in recorded form. As in the case of the CD containing Hasse’s Requiem in E flat major and Miserere in D minor (Carus 83.175), winner of several prestigious awards, once again the Dresdener Kammerchor and the Dresdner Barockorchester, under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann have devoted the present CD to a recording of Hasse’s Requiem in C major and the Miserere in C minor: this might also be a candidate for a some awards.
