The first volume contains 784 letters, 150 of which are published for the first time. The majority of the others have been newly transcribed, corrected through comparison with their sources, or with improved dating in the frequent cases of undated autographs. The collection conveys an image of twenty years in the life and career of Giacomo Puccini marked by radical changes. It documents the interlaced relationships with his friends and family, the ambition and difficulties he endured to sustain them, his brave existential choices. On the professional side, it illustrates the final part of his studies and his artistic growth, from Le Villi, to Edgar, to the first undisputed success of Manon Lescaut, to the final consecration of La Bohème. The letters included in this volume are also documents of the creation of Puccini’s peculiar writing qualities. The variety of addressees and of themes is matched, in fact, by a variety of tones and styles. Tender, friendly, confidential tones alternate with formal, professional, deferential, or even soapy accents. The letters mix everyday chronicles, common requests, scholarly quotes, bawdy language, and invectives. A penchant for poetry appears in the recurring rhymes that peep out in his prose, transforming the letters in poems, especially as a reply to other poetical messages. A strong graphic inspiration shines through his habit of using pictures instead of some key words, and through his original use of the space of sheets and postcards. Published by Olschki, Florence

890 letters (of which more than 370 are published for the first time) allow us to follow Puccini's life over a period of three years. These were difficult years in which the composer experienced a serious car accident, the end of his relationship with his lover Corinna and the failure of Madame Butterfly at its premiere at La Scala. After the prompt withdrawal of the score of the failed opera and the cancellation of the planned Roman premiere, the arduous search for themes for a new opera began. The style remains varied and worth reading.

The missing piece: Puccini's Preludio a Orchestra, one of the composer's earliest surviving works, is now at last available in an authentic, complete version! For a long time this piece was known only from a single fragmentary source with a passage missing from the middle section. But a few years ago a previously unknown manuscript was discovered in the Puccini Archive in Torre del Lago, and this was ultimately recognized as the autograph score of the Preludio a Orchestra. And it turned out that the score contains the complete work! So now Puccini's “Op. 1”, this remarkable testimony to his very early creative period, rich in formal, melodic and harmonic inventiveness, can be performed in its original form for the very first time!

Puccini composed his Messa a 4 voci con orchestra in 1878–1880. The musical quality, the energy, and the freshness of this youthful work led the composer to quote from his Mass in later operas, ensuring an ever-growing popularity for the work after its rediscovery in 1952.

The scholarly-critical edition of Puccini's only mass is the first volume of the "Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini". The "Edizione" has been published by the international research institute "Centro Studi Giacomo Puccini" since 2013.

An examination of the autograph score has led to numerous corrections being made in the "Edizione Nazionale" compared with the old-established music text of this work. As well as this, Puccini’s orchestral amendments in the Benedictus and his new arrangement of the tenor aria "Gratias agimus" from the Gloria, both dating from 1893, have been taken into consideration.

Thanks to an arrangement by J. Linckelmann (Carus 56.001/50), it is possible to perform the work in smaller settings.

As the second volume of the "Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini," a critical new edition of his compositions for orchestra has been published in the series "Musical Works." In addition to the familiar Preludio a orchestra (SC 1), Preludio sinfonico (SC 32), Trio in Fa (SC 52) and Capriccio sinfonico (SC 55), the volume contains a short but unknown Adagetto (SC 51), probably a sketch of a composition from Puccini's student years in Milan. And, for the first time ever, it also includes an orchestral version of the Scherzo in La (SC 34) from 1882, a work which was just recently discovered. The Scherzo, known until now only in a version for string quartet, complements the Trio in Fa, which is scored for the same orchestral forces, to form an independent movement.

The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now.

Puccini’s organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time.

This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into "bass" and "soprano".Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.
