Gounods Messe brève No. 7 was originally published in 1877 in a version for two equal voices with organ, then in 1890 it reappeared with the words Aux chapelles added to the title, arranged for soli, four-part mixed choir and organ. Gounod does not set the Credo, that movement is to be sung congregationally. Gounod’s characteristic of his declamatory style of matching motifs closely to the rhythm of the words, and of following the natural speech rhythms through recitation on one note is evident straight away in the Kyrie.

The full score contains at the same time the organ part.

The title Messe brève no. 7 is absolutely right for this composition. No movement lasts longer than five minutes, and as well as that, Gounod does not set the Credo. That movement is to be sung congregationally. And this makes the Mass extremely suitable for any festive church service. It is equally popular and suitable repertoire for smaller choirs because of its cantabile character and moderate difficulty level. Gounod’s characteristic of his declamatory style of matching motifs closely to the rhythm of the words, and of following the natural speech rhythms through recitation on one note is evident straight away in the Kyrie and, once you have heard it, it is really easy to remember.

In Charles Gounod’s L’absent, composed in 1873, "the absent one" asks at night time whether the beloved remembers him in the light of the moon and at the sound of the evening prayer bells.
These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist.
The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land... (Carus 83.495/00).
