Schütz’s Christmas History for soloists and six-part chorus (SSATTB) is an extremely vivid and palpable interpretation of the Christmas story. The musical setting of the words finds its highpoint in the central role of the evangelist, who embodies the idea of music related to the text like no other character; the chorus is also used in specific ways to add emotional depth to the text. Whilst the shepherds are portrayed in folk-like manner by touchingly simple musical means, the chorus of angels is characterized by rousing praise and joy. Common to all parts of the Christmas History is a lightness which, no matter how tangible and direct the music may be, presents every singer with a challenge.

The underlying recording was made using a historical tuning. It sounds approximately a semitone higher than our modern piano tuning.

Although the Mass in B minor is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most frequently performed vocal works, it continues to present performers and scientists with new enigmas and problems. This applies not only to the still unanswered question of why Bach composed but never performed this work, but also continues to the core of the musical text. Until his death, Bach himself repeatedly revised his Opus ultimum without ever leaving a final version. Directly after his death, the original manuscript was massively changed by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel; changes which, until today, pose many questions to researchers.

The present new recording rigorously follows – in the Kyrie and Gloria – Bach’s own meticulously configured “Dresdner Stimmen” [Dresden parts] and is thereby based, for the first time, exclusively on the musical text that emanated from Johann Sebastian Bach’s pen. Furthermore, additional movements with marked deviations from today’s familiar version have been made accessible as variants in the bonus material. The recording is based upon the new edition by the renowned Bach and Mozart scholar Ulrich Leisinger in cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, who also prepared the introduction in the CD booklet.

Handel’s setting of Psalm 110, Dixit Dominus, is one of his first surviving works, composed at the age of just 22 during his three-year stay in Italy. In this large-scale work, he already displays an assured mastery in his treatment of chorus and orchestra; the obstacles for choral singers, who need to be extremely agile, should therefore not be underestimated. The numerous fugal or imitatively interwoven sections – the intertwined sixteenth note writing of "Tu es sacerdos", the initial entries in "Dominus a dextris", and the concluding "Et in saecula" section with its many octave leaps need to be thoroughly learnt.

St. John Passion (version IV) from 29,90 €

The St John Passion occupies a special place in Johann Sebastian Bach’s output. Hardly any other work survives in so many and, at the same time, such different versions. This is because Bach made changes to the work for each of his Leipzig performances. For this CD recording, Hans-Christoph Rademann has chosen the fourth version of the Passion. Composed shortly before Bach’s death, it represents a return to the first version, augmented by larger instrumental forces. It is very close to the version of the Passion which has been mostly frequently performed since the first edition of 1830 – a mixture of the 1739 and 1749 versions – but by comparison, this constitutes an authentic version by Bach.

The performers are the choir and ensemble of the Gaechinger Cantorey, under the artistic direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. The soloists are Elizabeth Watts, soprano, Benno Schachtner, alto, Matthias Winckhler, bass, Patrick Grahl, tenor (Evangelist & arias), and Peter Harvey, bass (Christus).

St. Luke Passion & The Seven Last Words 0,00 €

A seventeenth century Passion “Radio Drama,” the sixth installment of the recording of Schütz’s complete works by the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann presents three powerful works for Passion. The St. Luke Passion SWV 480 unfolds a panorama inviting us to experience an intense, inward-looking pictorial reflection on Jesus’s Passion. The words of Luke the Evangelist are sung without accompaniment, the musical means skillfully reduced to a minimum. This narrative is interrupted by the choruses, creating dynamic emotional scenarios, clamoring, pleading, querying and raging: in this way, Schütz creates a form of Passion, a “radio drama” with a deeply moving intensification of events. The well-known “Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) SWV 478 is the first contribution of the viola da gamba player Hille Perl and her ensemble "The Sirius Viols" to the complete Schütz recording. The sophisticated structure of the work, the intense sensuality of the individual sections and the beauty of the musical message make the “Seven Last Words” a masterpiece. The third work on this CD, “Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott” (Have Mercy on me, O Lord God) SWV 447 for solo soprano accompanied by a consort of viols – a composition for the Good Friday service – represents a charming and appropriate complement to the “Seven Last Words”.

To mark the 40th anniversary of its founding, Carus has launched the series “Carus Classics” featuring outstanding recordings from its back catalog. The series, specially devised by Friedrich Forssman and Cornelia Feyll, is being issued in high-quality Digipaks with extensive booklets.

Reger worked intensively on more extended a cappella choral settings, with Bach’s motets especially serving as an important model. The first two of the Three Motets op. 110 in particular, dedicated to St Thomas’s Choir Leipzig, represent a tremendous challenge for choral singers with their closely-worked double fugues. By contrast, the Eight sacred songs op. 138 show Reger’s mastery at simple setting – a masterly “new simplicity” with which the composer completed the circle back to his earlier choral works.

Heinrich Schütz is generally regarded as a master of the art of setting text to music, particularly the text of the Bible in its unaltered form which was of substantial significance to Lutheran doctrine. On the other hand, there are only few examples of settings of rhymed texts in Schütz's oeuvre. One of these is the so-called "Becker-Psalter," a collection of psalm translations by the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker. Shortly after the death of his wife, Schütz concentrated on this collection and set numerous verses to music. In the 15th volume of the Schütz Complete Recording, Hans-Christoph Rademann and his Dresdner Kammerchor present a colorful interpretation of a selection of these unusually unadorned, transparent, folk-like compositions. The cross-section of the CD is based on the selection of psalms that Schutz composed for his Psalms of David (Carus 83.255), thereby creating a sibling CD for these magnificent, multi-choral works.

In the complete works of Heinrich Schütz, performed by the Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann and produced by Carus, the fifth installment presents the Cantiones Sacrae (SWV 53–93). In 1625 – during the Thirty Years' War – Schütz published this collection as his opus 4. In the 40 Latin motets he used texts from the prayer book of Andreas Musculus, which is based on psalms and verses from the Song of Songs, as well as texts from the Gospels, devotional texts and various prayers. The fact that today these expressive prayers have not gained the popularity of Schütz's other great collections is due, not least, to the high demands which the composer places upon his performers. With the guiding principle "historically informed – interpreted today," Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Dresdner Kammerchor present precisely the lesser-known works of Schütz on the highest artistic level as an open invitation for new discovery. The recorded performance of the complete works of Schütz is being produced in cooperation with MDR Figaro.

Even today, Protestant church music has been strongly characterized by Johann Sebastian Bach. The "musical preacher" allows the listener to understand both emotionally and rationally the theological message entirely in the spirit of Martin Luther. Therefore, it is is fitting that in 2017 the newly released recording of the Gaechinger Cantorey under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann reflects the Reformation in full: The cantata Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild was written for Reformation Day in 1725; the "Lutheran" Mass BWV 236 musically draws to individual parts of the cantata; and the chorale cantata Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort is based on a hymn written by the Reformer.

At the same time, the CD also characterizes the new direction of the Gaechinger Cantorey: For its second CD recording under the direction of Rademann, the choir is accompanied by the Cantorey’s own newly formed baroque orchestra. The CD also features the first recording of a chest organ, commissioned by the Bachakademie, that is a replica from the the organ workshop of the legendary Gottfried Silbermann, a contemporary of Bach.
