The choral collection Loreley. German Folk Songs for Coro SATB presents 147 songs in a wide range of styles. About two thirds of the settings have been specially written by top composers for this collection. As well as numbers with more traditional harmonies, there are also easy jazzy arrangements (by composers such as Matthias E. Becker, Peter Schindler, and Bernd Englbrecht) and settings using other modern, clever styles (by Sylke Zimpel, John Hoybye, and Theo Brandmüller).

A particular highlight of the collection is its openness to outside influences, with contributions by composers from Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. Mit dem 2009 initiierten WIEGENLIEDER-Projekt konnte Carus für das Thema Singen mit Kindern eine breite Öffentlichkeit herstellen. Viele der überlieferten Lieder haben bei Eltern, Großeltern und Musikinteressierten ein neues Interesse geweckt. Das VOLKSLIEDER-Projekt führt diese Idee weiter.

Die Sammlung mit 77 der schönsten deutschen Volkslieder lädt ein, die Schönheit der Melodien und der Poesie der alten Liedtexte neu zu entdecken. Die Auswahl enthält viele bekannte Klassiker wie Der Mai ist gekommen, Die Gedanken sind frei oder Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust, aber auch unbekanntere Lieder. Zugleich möchte das Volkslieder-Projekt zum Singen und Musizieren mit Kindern anregen. Daher sind auch Lieder mit dabei, die ganz besonders Kinder ansprechen wie Heut kommt der Hans zu mir, freut sich die Lies oder Bruder Jakob.

The repertoire of this four-voice choral collection ranges from the Baroque via the Romantic era to modern choral music. New settings of well-known Christmas songs have been especially composed for this collection.

Many renowned composers contributed to this choral collection. A special attraction is the fact that, from an international perspective, a number of traditional German songs were arranged by composers from Poland, Denmark, England, Japan, South America, Italy, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. For several of the Christmas songs two arrangments were chosen, so that an older and a modern setting of would be available.

Around forty lieder were expressly arranged for the collection. Many of the contemporary arrangements draw on jazz and swing styles, or on pop music.

What would Christmas time be without music-making together? Advent, Christmas, and winter songs play an important role for all beginners on a melody instrument, because with these they can show off their progress on the instrument during the first year. And nothing is better suited to this than well-loved and popular pieces such as Christmas classics.

The volumes in our series for instrumental teaching, developed in collaboration with the Landesakademie für die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Württemberg, all contain 20 easy carols arranged in progressive level of difficulty. Experienced instrumental teachers have made a selection of carols for each instrument according to specific criteria. These can be mastered as part of music school lessons after just a few weeks and months. All the carols have been chosen and transposed so that the range and fingering combinations do not exceed the level of difficulty for the first three years of learning.

The piano accompaniment is of moderate difficulty. For many of the carols, an ad lib upper or lower part is included which can also be played by instrumental pupils. The volumes are therefore suitable for individual as well as group tuition.

The arrangements are based on the piano and instrumental books from the CHRISTMAS CAROLS project (Carus 2.403/03 und 2.404/03) which is part of the LIEDERPROJEKT, the charitable project to further singing with children. The books contain singing texts for all the carols, providing a full range of options for singing and playing together at Christmas.

All the books include the printed music of the piano accompaniment. Digital playalong tracks are available for all the books.

As a part of the collection of love songs for the prizewinning LIEDERPROJEKT, several new arrangements have been created for soprano and string quartet that can be heard on the two Liebeslieder CDs (83.028 and 83.029). The arrangements are by Andreas N. Tarkmann, emeritus professor for instrumentation and arrangement at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts. Four English songs make up the main part of the collection: Purcell’s If music be the food of love and Morely’s It was a lover and his lass as well as the two folk melodies Down by the Salley gardens and Greensleeves. In contrast, the painfully beautiful Finnish folk song Kukkuu and the slow pavane Belle qui tien ma vie, from the pen of Thoinot Arbeau, are included. It is a coronation for all musically oriented wedding feasts!

“With the Kinderlieder aus Deutschland und Europa [Children’s songs from Germany and Europe] we are sending songs out into the world. They are a small peephole to view other cultures and traditions, making it possible to achieve a playful musical contact with our neighbors.” (Peter Schindler) The “Vokalhelden” [vocal heroes] from the Education Program of the Berlin Philharmonic interpret 22 children’s songs from throughout all of Europe in arrangements by Peter Schindler. The songs are performed in their respective languages, often with a German transcription. This CD is part of the “Lieder project” which promotes and benefits singing with children. This project presents texts, music and recordings of songs to sing. It emphasizes quality and is designed especially for children. The goal is to once again focus on singing together in families. To date, 100 solo singers, vocal ensemble, choirs, instrumentalists and over 300 children have offered their time and talents to the Carus Lieder project. Profits derived from the sale of books and CDs in the Lieder project have now reached 400,000 Euros – these proceeds are being donated to causes which further singing with children.

The Folk Songs choral collection explores the musical world of Great Britain and Ireland. It contains 21 arrangements of English-language verse songs, canons, and ballads for mixed unaccompanied chorus. The folk songs are as diverse as the stories they tell: from the moving “Greensleeves” and “Two hearts beat as one”, through charming settings such as “A rosebud by my early walk” and “There were three ravens”, to saucy and tongue-in-cheek songs such as “Dashing away with the smoothing iron” and “The mother-in-law”.

The stylistic treatment is very varied: the collection contains both original settings from the 13th century as well as arrangements specially commissioned from contemporary composers for the collection. The settings are in three to five parts, and the vocal parts sometimes divide. They are by well-known British and Irish composers such as Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Villiers Stanford, as well as contemporary composers such as John Rutter and Carsten Gerlitz – who give a new twist to these traditional songs.

Calmus Ensemble has recorded six arrangements from this collection for their CD Folk Songs (Carus 83.034/00).

Melodious evening songs lend themselves to a quiet ending or an imaginatively accented concert. This choral collection is a selection with about 40 English, German and international lullabies and evening songs of stylistic diversity, with easily singable settings for a mixed choir, some of which include piano accompaniments. The repertoire ranges from Baroque and Romantic works to contemporary works, with settings newly-composed for the collection and well-known lullabies and evening songs. The conductor’s volume includes a CD with recordings of selected pieces.

The songs chosen are largely from the German and English repertoire, but also include pieces in Spanish, French, and Russian.

With well-known compositions by composers such as J. S. Bach, Brahms, Elgar, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Rheinberger, Scholefield, Stanford, and Sullivan.

Ten of the songs have been newly-arranged specially for this collection by leading composers (Ludwig Böhme, Daniel Carter, Ian McDougal, Gunther Martin Göttsche, Reijo Kekkonen, Clifford W. King, Andrej Makor, Giacomo Mezzalira, Christoph Müller, and Peter Schindler).
