In addition to the Urtext edition of Haydn’s popular and most often performed Mass, the „Little Organ Mass”, Carus now offers the work in its “Choir & Organ” series. This series consists of works, originally with orchestra, whose accompaniments have been arranged solely for organ. All that is required for a performance are two full scores (one for the conductor and one for the organist), and either vocal scores, or the lower-priced choral scores.

The reduction is based on the Carus Urtext edition (Carus 40.600/00). For later performances with orchestra only the orchestral parts would be needed.

When Haydn wrote the Nelson Mass ("Missa in Angustiis") in less than eight weeks in 1798, he had written no masses in the preceding 14 years, but instead, had composed numerous symphonies and chamber music works. As with most of Haydn’s masses, the Missa Cellensis is more well known by its alias,“Cäcilienmesse” (Cecilia Mass), rather than by its original name. Joseph Haydn began work on the mass in 1766, when he assumed the position as Music Director for the princely Court of Esterházy. With its unusually large orchestra and a duration of almost one hour, this composition is the longest and most extensive of Haydn’s masses. Haydn followed the traditional structure by setting the parts of the Ordinary in individual movements, in which the text is interpreted through the use of variety and contrast in scoring and compositional technique. For quite some time now, Jos van Immerseel and his Ensemble Anima Eterna have enjoyed an outstanding reputation for presenting their unique and special type of historical performance practice: For the present recording they employed Vienna wind instruments and the string instruments are modeled on instruments from the Viennese classical period. In the unique acoustic setting of the Dresdner Frauenkirche their truly brilliant recording of the Missa Cellensis has initiated the Carus series of the complete masses of Joseph Haydn.

The outstanding features of Haydn’s Missa Cellensis in C major are the expression of heartfelt joy, the profoundly emotional and meticulous interpretation of the text, and the use of operatic techniques, for which Haydn was later accused of being "secular". As well as this, the Mass occupies an isolated position in Haydn’s oeuvre because of its mighty dimensions – it lasts about an hour, and the scoring includes trumpets and timpani. Anyone who studies this work will agree that it has "something indescribably touching" and "deeply moves the innermost of the soul", as a reviewer wrote in 1804.

The popular “Nicolai Mass” by Haydn is both diverse and traditional. Haydn conveys this exhilarating jubilance through numerous wide leaps, in particular sixths and octaves, that the chorister has to hear well in order to reach the high notes correctly (the soprano has to sing up to B2). With its syncopated counterpoint, the short, virtuosic “Amen” fugue in the “Gloria” requires a firm sense of rhythm – good that one can hear and practise this slowly using the Carus Choir Coach!
