In the "Sanctus" of Mozart's "Mass in C major", the sparrows twitter from the eaves in the violin part. And yet, despite its traditional aspects, this mass has several pitfalls for the choir in the "Kyrie" and the "Gloria": In the "Kyrie", the "eleison" is embellished with jubilant sixteenth-note chains that merge into a modulation – at this point it is good to be able to hear the course of this melody slowly with the app. In the "Gloria", the extensive "Qui tollis" is striking: the chromaticism quickly becomes clear when hearing the music in its entirety with the app.

There can be no doubt – the Missa in C minor KV 427 by W. A. Mozart is a fascinating work. Simply calling it a “mass” is inaccurate; indeed, there is hardly more than a musical torso full of enigmas and problems – and brimming with magnificent music. What has survived is a fragment, in more ways than one. Mozart left the work unfinished; moreover parts of the autograph have been lost. Carus has now produced a new edition which is not only based upon a profound knowledge of Mozart’s music and the church music practice of that time, but also meets with the current demands of performance practice. Frieder Bernius is the co-editor of the sheet music edition; he and his Stuttgart Chamber Choir recorded this version on CD. The recording impresses not only by the outstanding musical quality, but also by the particularly noble equipment in a hardcover booklet. In addition to the new version of the mass, the CD also contains a bonustrack with the Credo fragment without completed instrumental parts. A true discovery!

The Missa in c K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. As it was not completed by Mozart, attempts were frequently made from the 19th century onwards to complete it and thus make it performable – with quite differing results. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version while maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, without obscuring Mozart’s musical manuscript. Whether it’s in the double-choir „Qui tollis“ or the „Cum Sancto Spiritu“ fugue, the choral singers are most certainly challenged, and yet the atmosphere of the work mustn’t be lost. If the blend of accuracy and shaping works, nobody, whether performer nor listener, will be able to resist the fascination of this work.
