Elijah is regarded as a milestone in Mendelssohn’s compositional output and as a high point in the oratorio literature of the 19th century. Elijah, Mendelssohn’s second great oratorio, was composed just a year before his premature death. This excitingly dramatic work also expresses a fervent belief in God, a belief which in the 19th century was no longer self-evident. Mendelssohn transposed the visible world of the Old Testament into numerous musical expressive possibilities in which Old Testament texts, including psalm texts and commentaries from the words of the Prophets, were shaped into biblical dramas. If the voices enter confidently and in rapid succession in the opening chorus, and the phrasing has a heavenly lightness through secure intonation, then we can really celebrate Christmas.

Formerly one of Mendelssohn’s most popular sacred compositions, especially during the Victorian period, the anthem Hör mein Bitten (Hear my prayer) has been overlooked in more recent times in favor of his larger works. The anthem was written in 1844 for solo soprano, choir and obbligato organ and newly orchestrated by Mendelssohn in early 1847. He conceived his anthem in four linked parts. The numerous alternations between the solo voice an chorus in the score bring to mind the traditional English verse anthem, though the exchanges here seem more tied to the text rather than to a preconceived formal scheme.

The anthem Hör mein Bitten (Hear my Prayer) was regarded as one of Mendelssohn’s best-known sacred compositions, particularly in the Victorian period. In a dialogue with the solo soprano, the chorus has a proactive, rather than an accompanying, role. Short entries alternate, sometimes with the chorus delivering a harmonic sound tapestry, sometimes responding directly to the soloist’s statement. This continuous interplay requires the ability to react musically and for collective music-making, forming a unified whole.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Symphony cantata Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise) is the conclusion of the recording of his complete sacred music, performed by the Kammerchor Stuttgart, under the direction of Frieder Bernius. Originally conceived as a small oratorio or a large psalm-cantata, the combination of 3 symphonic movements with 12 vocal movements conformed to neither of these two genres; thus Mendelssohn called the work a “Sinfonie-Kantate.” In the course of the 20th century the unavoidable and, in part, negative comparisons to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony led to the Lobgesang being almost completely ignored. It is only in the last few decades, spurred on by the definitive impulse of Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart, that the work has come to be regarded as a successful example of the symphonic conception of Mendelssohn’s sacred music, in which he attempted to bridge the gap between church and concert hall.

Mendelssohn’s setting of the liturgical sequence Lauda Sion is relatively unknown. This is partly because it was written at the same time as Elijah, and partly because he never conducted it himself, and it was only published after his early death. With this work it is deep breaths and good support which are required above all, in order to sustain well through the long phrases and arrive triumphantly at the end without losing any radiance.

In this early work, written in 1822 when the composer was just 13 years old, we can already recognize his characteristic style. At the same time he makes references to the same work by his lifelong role-model, J. S. Bach. In the first and last movements all the choral parts have to master challenging coloratura passages. This is where the "slow" mode in the app is ideal for practicing. In the second movement the upper voice chorus sings unaccompanied (or accompanied colla parte) and is a challenge in respect of intonation.
