Today an increasing number church choirs are lamenting the lack of male voices. The present Chorbuch a tre (choir book a tre), anticipated by many, addresses this situation. It contains 160 three-part settings for two female voices and one male voice (some with accompaniment). The collection, designed for ecumenical use, offers a broad selection of choral settings for the church year, times of the day, praise and thanks, the Ordinary, etc. It includes works from from the 17th century to the present, and presents a range of various styles (including gospel and sacred pop). About 50 settings were written for this choir book by renowned composers and church musicians. Calmus Christmas Carols is an anthology of thirteen challenging, mostly five-part settings (SSATB) for choirs and ensembles. In the production of its successful CD Calmus Christmas Carols (Carus 83.432), the Calmus Ensemble Leipzig set out to present well-known melodies in a fresh, colorful garb, thus bathing them in a new, charming light for the enjoyment of both singers and listeners.

These arrangements are now being published as a volume of sheet music for choir. They make use of structures of both serious and popular music from various epochs. They are delightful and surprising at the same time.

The Choral Collection French Choral Music is a real treasure trove for choirs to explore music from France. The collection contains 45 sacred compositions for mostly four-part mixed choir, all of which were composed in France. In compiling the collection the editor Denis Rouger, Professor of Choral Conducting at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart, has drawn on his extensive experience as Cantor at Notre-Dame and Sainte-Madeleine in Paris, as well as on his work with many professional and amateur ensembles in Germany and France.The result is an extremely varied choral collection with works from the Renaissance to the present day.

In addition to well-known works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Gabriel Fauré, and Camille Saint-Saëns, the collection includes first editions of previously largely unknown works by composers such as Adolphe Adam and Charles-Marie Widor. The choral director’s volume includes a CD with recordings of selected works, sung by the figure humaine chamber choir conducted by the editor, which will help with learning and rehearsing the repertoire. Separate editions are also available.

Most of the pieces have texts from the Latin liturgy which are also familiar in other countries. Added translations into German, English and French help to understand the original singing texts.

The choral collection Hallelujah. Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required.

The arrangements with their catchy rhythms, groove, their blue notes and other elements from Jazz and Blues and the principles of call-and-response will move performers and audiences in equal measure.

As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Young composers from the USA (such as Courtney Carey, Marques Garrett) and arrangers from Canada, Denmark, and Germany (including Mark Sirett, John Høybye, Thomas Gabriel, Carsten Gerlitz, Gunther Martin Göttsche, and Hans Lüdemann) have contributed to this stylistically extremely varied choral collection.

The medium difficulty level will enable many choirs to get to grips with the gospel style, something which perhaps few of them are very familiar with. Tips from the editors on performance, and a CD recording with a selection of the arrangements will help with learning the pieces.

With their deep and emotional symbolism of captivity and repression on the one hand and redemption and freedom on the other hand, these Gospel settings are well-suited for many uses in concerts and church services.

Lore-Ley: German folk songs for choir from 35,00 €

The choral collection Loreley. German Folk Songs for Coro SATB presents 147 songs in a wide range of styles. About two thirds of the settings have been specially written by top composers for this collection. As well as numbers with more traditional harmonies, there are also easy jazzy arrangements (by composers such as Matthias E. Becker, Peter Schindler, and Bernd Englbrecht) and settings using other modern, clever styles (by Sylke Zimpel, John Hoybye, and Theo Brandmüller).

A particular highlight of the collection is its openness to outside influences, with contributions by composers from Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. As well as these new compositions, the collection contains famous folk song arrangements (by Brahms, Silcher, and Reger) and tried and tested settings by more modern composers (Helmut Barbe, Wolfram Buchenberg, Hans Schanderl, and Volker Wangenheim). A few of the folk songs have been included in two arrangements, so that there is not only a historic and a contemporary setting to choose from, but the verses can even be sung in alternation.

The choral tradition of English cathedrals and universities is famous the world over. Through the centuries on the British Isles an immense storehouse of musical treasures have been composed: beautiful sounding choral settings which, in the meantime, have come to enjoy a great popularity on the European continent.

For the collection of "English Choral Music. Motets and Anthems from Byrd to Elgar" Richard Mailänder and Christopher Robinson, the editors, have compiled 40 outstanding motets and anthems from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In Germany and elsewhere in Europe these four- and five-part settings, whether a cappella or with obbligato organ, are especially suited for services or church concerts. The composers of the golden age of English music, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons are represented in this collection, as are the baroque masters Henry Purcell and William Boyce and, among other composers from the 19th century, Samuel Sebastian Wesley, Charles Villiers Stanford, Charles Hubert Parry and Edward Elgar. A supplementary CD, performed and recorded by the Figuralchor Cologne, is also available.

The repertoire of this four-voice choral collection ranges from the Baroque via the Romantic era to modern choral music. New settings of well-known Christmas songs have been especially composed for this collection.

Many renowned composers contributed to this choral collection. A special attraction is the fact that, from an international perspective, a number of traditional German songs were arranged by composers from Poland, Denmark, England, Japan, South America, Italy, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. For several of the Christmas songs two arrangments were chosen, so that an older and a modern setting of would be available.

Around forty lieder were expressly arranged for the collection. Many of the contemporary arrangements draw on jazz and swing styles, or on pop music.

The repertoire is suitable for Advent, Christmas, the New Year and Epiphany.
