Dvorák composed his Mass in D as a commissioned work for the consecration of a chapel. So the first version was simply for chorus, soloists and organ – an orchestra probably would not have fitted into the space. The full attention is therefore on the vocal parts, another reason to learn the Mass thoroughly so that the lyrical-meditative mood Dvorák intended can be created.

The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. For every vocal range a separate mp3-Audio-CD or a mp3-download containing each choir part is available. The Carus Choir Coach is based on recorded interpretations by renowned artists who have performed the work from carefully prepared Carus Urtext editions. Each choir part is presented in three different versions:

Original recording

Coach: each part is accompanied by the piano, with the original recording sounding in the background

Coach in slow mode: the tempo of the coach slows down to 70% of the original version – through this reduction passages can be learned more effectively.

Performers: Helga Hein-Guardian (soprano), Verena Keller (alto), Arthur Janzen (tenore), Hartmut Hein (basso) – Motettenchor Stuttgart – Günter Graulich

The composition of the Requiem is surrounded by anecdotes and legends. Mozart’s student Franz Xaver Süßmayr completed the unfinished work after Mozart’s death. But in musical terms, the work offers far more than mere anecdotes: Mozart’s choral writing, at the height of his art, presents singers with harmonically challenging passages and thrilling fugues. If you master this, there’s great enjoyment to be had from singing the work, despite its subject matter ...

The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. For every vocal range a separate Audio CD or MP3 and download containing each choir part is available. Erden op. 13 is regarded as Arnold Schoenberg’s last tonal composition and is
one of the few choral works of the Second Viennese School. On the same day that
he completed his op. 13, Schoenberg made the first sketches for his 2nd String
Quartet, a key work in atonal music. Although Schoenberg later orchestrated Friede auf Erden, he intended the piece to be performed unaccompanied.

Due to
insufficient rehearsals, the planned premiere in 1908 was canceled at short
notice. Franz Schreker took on the next attempt in 1911 and requested a string
orchestra accompaniment from Schoenberg to support the choir, particularly with
the intonation. Nowadays, Friede auf Erden is usually performed a cappella by
powerful chamber choirs. With carus music, the demanding voice leading in the
context of the multi-layered sound can be practiced excellently - so that
nothing stands in the way of rehearsals and a successful performance.

The genuineness of the composer’s faith is particularly moving in this work, as is evident in the changes and omissions of the text in the Gloria and Credo sections. The demands on the choir, in particular in the high soprano, should not be underestimated despite the simple, riveting melodies and a clear structure of the movements.

The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. The choir, as the voice of the people, carries the musical action almost continuously. In his Requiem Brahms masterfully combines compositional techniques drawn from earlier centuries with what were then new harmonies, a combination which still presents challenges for choral singers today. So that the work achieves the monumental impression of sound and the desired depth of expression the composer intended, the parts need to be secure – no easy matter with many changes of key, excursions into distant harmonies, and all sorts of pitfalls regarding intonation.

The enlivening presentation of the words finds its highpoint in the central role of the evangelist, who embodies the idea of music related to the text like no other character. The chorus is also used specifically to add emotional depth to the text. Whilst the shepherds are portrayed in folk-like manner by touchingly simple musical means, the chorus of angels is characterized by rousing praise and joy. Common to all parts of the Weihnachtshistorie is a lightness which, no matter how tangible and direct the music may be, presents every singer with a challenge.

The Christmas story, according to the Gospels of St. Luke and St. Matthew, combined with free poetry and individual chorale stanzas attains, together with the clearly structured, festive Baroque music, an eloquent radiance of timeless beauty. To confidently keep up with the frequent, sometimes very rapid sixteenth-coloraturas – for example in the “herrliche Chöre” (no. 1), the “Wohlgefallen” (no. 21, Vivace!), and the “Schnauben der stolzen Feinde” (no. 54) – practicing with the Slow Mode of the app is particularly recommended.

The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. Even though it never attained the popularity of the Christmas Oratorio, Bach himself performed it four times during his lifetime. Some parts of the oratorio originated as parody movements from the birthday cantata "Entfliehet, verschwindet, entweichet, ihr Sorgen" for Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weißenfels. The second work on this CD, the Ascension oratorio "Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen" BWV 11 (1735) also goes back to another work, namely "Froher Tag, verlangte Stunde," a no longer extant cantata composed for the inauguration of the new St. Thomas’s School. In his recording, Frieder Bernius demonstrates at the highest level, that both these oratorios are masterpieces which do not need to hide behind their better known sibling works.

Elijah, Mendelssohn’s second great oratorio, was composed just a year before his premature death. This excitingly dramatic work also expresses a fervent belief in God, a belief which in the 19th century was no longer self-evident. Mendelssohn transposed the visible world of the Old Testament into numerous musical expressive possibilities in which Old Testament texts, including psalm texts and commentaries from the words of the Prophets, were shaped into biblical dramas. With Elijah Frieder Bernius continues the prizewinning CD series of Mendelssohn’s complete sacred works.

In a dialogue with the solo soprano, the chorus has a proactive, rather than an accompanying, role. Short entries alternate, sometimes with the chorus delivering a harmonic sound tapestry, sometimes responding directly to the soloist’s statement. This continuous interplay requires the ability to react musically and for collective music-making, forming a unified whole.

The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. In several numbers the biblical message is initially expounded by a soloist, then taken up by the chorus, repeated and expanded. The important role played by the chorus is also reflected in the difficulty of some passages. Originally conceived as a small oratorio or a large psalm-cantata, the combination of 3 symphonic movements with 12 vocal movements conformed to neither of these two genres; thus Mendelssohn called the work a “Sinfonie-Kantate.” In the course of the 20th century the unavoidable and, in part, negative comparisons to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony led to the Lobgesang being almost completely ignored. It is only in the last few decades, spurred on by the definitive impulse of Frieder Bernius and the Kammerchor Stuttgart, that the work has come to be regarded as a successful example of the symphonic conception of Mendelssohn’s sacred music, in which he attempted to bridge the gap between church and concert hall.

In the first part, which can also be separately performed as the Funeral Anthem, the corresponding singing text is underlaid additionally in italics. In Israel in Egypt a wide range of expression is required from the chorus – sometimes rejoicing festively, sometimes dramatic and expressive. In the choral writing, CPE Bach used a quite different style from the predominantly homophonic style of some of his later works.

The Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the central sacred vocal compositions in the history of music. Hans-Christoph Rademann has now devoted his first CD as director of the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to this outstanding work and, together with the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Freiburger Barockorchester as well as renowned soloists in the field of historically informed performance practice, has set new artistic standards.
Although the Mass in B minor is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most frequently performed vocal works, it continues to present performers and scientists with new enigmas and problems. This applies not only to the still unanswered question of why Bach composed but never performed this work, but also continues to the core of the musical text. Until his death, Bach himself repeatedly revised his Opus ultimum without ever leaving a final version. Directly after his death, the original manuscript was massively changed by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel; changes which, until today, pose many questions to researchers.
The present new recording rigorously follows – in the Kyrie and Gloria – Bach’s own meticulously configured “Dresdner Stimmen” [Dresden parts] and is thereby based, for the first time, exclusively on the musical text that emanated from Johann Sebastian Bach’s pen. Furthermore, additional movements with marked deviations from today’s familiar version have been made accessible as variants in the bonus material. The recording is based upon the new edition by the renowned Bach and Mozart scholar Ulrich Leisinger in cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, who also prepared the introduction in the CD booklet.

The recording is also released as a Deluxe version (Carus 83.315) which contains, in addition to the CDs and a comprehensive booklet, a bonus DVD with additional material:
- Film: Bach’s Secret Legacy. Hans-Christoph Rademann in search of the true B-minor Mass
- Live Concert Recording: „Kyrie eleison I“, live in the Beethovensaal, Liederhalle Stuttgart (31 January 2015)
- Bach’s Manuscript: The “Dresden Parts“ of 1733 in PDF format

Awarded the Preis der detuschen Schallplattenkritik

Awarded the Pizzicato Supersonic Award
