A seventeenth century Passion “Radio Drama,” the sixth installment of the recording of Schütz’s complete works by the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann presents three powerful works for Passion. The St. Luke Passion SWV 480 unfolds a panorama inviting us to experience an intense, inward-looking pictorial reflection on Jesus’s Passion. The words of Luke the Evangelist are sung without accompaniment, the musical means skillfully reduced to a minimum. This narrative is interrupted by the choruses, creating dynamic emotional scenarios, clamoring, pleading, querying and raging: in this way, Schütz creates a form of Passion, a “radio drama” with a deeply moving intensification of events. The well-known “Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) SWV 478 is the first contribution of the viola da gamba player Hille Perl and her ensemble "The Sirius Viols" to the complete Schütz recording. The sophisticated structure of the work, the intense sensuality of the individual sections and the beauty of the musical message make the “Seven Last Words” a masterpiece. The third work on this CD, “Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott” (Have Mercy on me, O Lord God) SWV 447 for solo soprano accompanied by a consort of viols – a composition for the Good Friday service – represents a charming and appropriate complement to the “Seven Last Words”.

Heinrich Schütz is generally regarded as a master of the art of setting text to music, particularly the text of the Bible in its unaltered form which was of substantial significance to Lutheran doctrine. On the other hand, there are only few examples of settings of rhymed texts in Schütz's oeuvre. One of these is the so-called "Becker-Psalter," a collection of psalm translations by the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker. Shortly after the death of his wife, Schütz concentrated on this collection and set numerous verses to music. In the 15th volume of the Schütz Complete Recording, Hans-Christoph Rademann and his Dresdner Kammerchor present a colorful interpretation of a selection of these unusually unadorned, transparent, folk-like compositions. The cross-section of the CD is based on the selection of psalms that Schutz composed for his Psalms of David (Carus 83.255), thereby creating a sibling CD for these magnificent, multi-choral works.

In the complete works of Heinrich Schütz, performed by the Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann and produced by Carus, the fifth installment presents the Cantiones Sacrae (SWV 53–93). In 1625 – during the Thirty Years' War – Schütz published this collection as his opus 4. In the 40 Latin motets he used texts from the prayer book of Andreas Musculus, which is based on psalms and verses from the Song of Songs, as well as texts from the Gospels, devotional texts and various prayers. The fact that today these expressive prayers have not gained the popularity of Schütz's other great collections is due, not least, to the high demands which the composer places upon his performers. With the guiding principle "historically informed – interpreted today," Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Dresdner Kammerchor present precisely the lesser-known works of Schütz on the highest artistic level as an open invitation for new discovery. The recorded performance of the complete works of Schütz is being produced in cooperation with MDR Figaro.

When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schütz’s compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music, one of his most important works from the year 1648, is characterized by the carefully-thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo – it was his conviction that every young composer should obtain “the proper foundation for a good counterpoint.” In spite of the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the “Musicus poeticus” instilled his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ, according to content, in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones.

“Heinrich Schütz – The complete recording”: In the coming year a recording of the complete works of Heinrich Schütz under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann will be released on the Carus label. Together with the Dresdner Kammerchor and many renowned soloists these works, true to historical performance practice, will be presented. Thanks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schütz was able to pursue a three-year course of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo libro de Madrigali. Already in this, his Opus primus, Schütz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century. With the St. John Passion the triad of Schütz’s settings of the Passion is now available within the framework of the complete recording of Schütz’s works by the Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. The Passions are testimony to Schütz’s highly musical artistic aspirations, they are works of his old age and maturity with which an entire musical epoch reaches its conclusion. For today’s listener getting involved with this music, with its artistic reduction of means can lead to a significant musical-aesthetic experience. Purely a cappella singing insures a special, intimate and impressive listening experience, but it demands of the performers perfect intonation and a flawless rendering of the text – a challenge in which soloists Jan Kobow, Harry van der Kamp (the Evangelist), and Jesus, as well as the Dresdner Kammerchor succeed in the most impressive style and manner. This recording of the Passion is compeimented by the Litania, “Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison,” the motet for the Last Supper, “Unser Herr Jesus Christus in der Nacht, da er verraten ward” SWV 495 and by the gospel dialog, “Ach Herr, du Sohn Davids” SWV appendix 2.

Under the general direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann Carus will realize the first recording of the complete works of Heinrich Schutz by 2017. With a total of 22 CDs and countless concerts the first German composer of European statue will be given a tangible monument. The Kleine geistliche Konzerte, Part 1 is volume 7 of the series and the first of the CDs within the complete recording that present solo concertos by Schutz. Heinrich Schütz’s compositions were hugely influenced by the horrors of the Thirty Years’ War. He continually assimilated his anxious and painful experiences into his works, but in the process created an optimistic, peaceful view of the future. His Kleine geistliche Konzerte II are also a highly sensitive response to the social conditions of the time. A CD recording of these works is now being released as part of the Schütz Complete Recording. This is one of the last recordings with the harpsichordist, organist, and conductor Ludger Rémy, who died in 2017 after a long illness. Hans-Christoph Rademann pays tribute to his long-time colleague in a personal foreword.

Heinrich Schütz composed his last work, a monumental setting of Psalm 119, in 1671 at the age of 86, complemented by a setting of Psalm 100, and a setting of the German Magnificat. This group of works, known as the "Schwanengesang", or "swansong", is a highly personal musical declaration, distinguished by its elegance and spiritual depth. As part of the Schütz Complete Recording, the Dresdner Kammerchor conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann has again made a recording which sets new standards, presenting both the sung and the expressive elements of the composition in exemplary fashion. This recording of the fragmentary-surviving Schwanengesang is based on a edition of the music by Werner Breig, published in November 2017 as part of the Stuttgart Schütz Edition. In many passages it suggests other approaches to reconstruction from the version published in 1984, and so approaches the Schwanengesang in a completely different way.

Volume 11 of the celebrated complete recording of Schütz’s works presents the St. Matthew Passion, SWV 479. Schütz’s Passions according to the evangelists Matthew, Luke and John were all commissioned by the court in Dresden: they were pure a cappella settings of high artisanal standard combined with a profound, intensely personal expressivity, these works form the conclusion of Schütz’s settings of biblical scenes. They are the mature works of old age, representing, as it were, the crowning conclusion of an entire musical epoch. The St. Matthew Passion, the last of the three passion settings, was composed in 1666. Particularly in this work the composer called for the Bible texts to be sung in an emphatic declamatory style, requiring flawless intonation and perfect comprehensibility of the words. These requirements are effortlessly met by Georg Poplutz as the Evangelist and the excellent Dresdner Kammerchor under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. The CD program is ideally complemented by the "Litania" SWV 458, the psalm setting "In dich habe ich gehoffet, Herr" SWV 128, as well as "O du allersüßester und liebster Herr Jesu" SWV 340.

Heinrich Schütz spent his whole life searching for that which is new in music. The Symphoniae Sacrae I, which were presented in 1629, also testify to this. Schütz composed them as a result of the impressions made upon him by his second journey to Venice. In addition to the numerous Italian stylistic traits which can be traced back to Monteverdi, the 20 concertos – all in Latin – particularly impress with their great variety of timbres: solo pieces, duets and trios for all voice type are combined with diverse string and wind instruments and are governed by the emotional and expressive world of the text. The 27 concerts of the Symphoniae Sacrae II by Heinrich Schütz represent milestones in the development of the German-language sacred concert for virtuoso vocal soloists, instruments and basso continuo. The compositions are highly developed, complex, moving, music-historically valuable and compositionally sophisticated, with an extraordinary density of events and abundance of ideas.

In Volume 18 of the complete Schütz recording, Hans-Christoph Rademann, supported by selected instrumentalists and excellent soloists such as Dorothee Mields and Georg Poplutz, has once again created a recording of exemplary quality. A worthy monument in sound to Heinrich Schütz.
