Schütz’s Weihnachts-Historie for soloists and six-part chorus (SSATTB) is an extremely vivid and palpable interpretation of the Christmas story. The enlivening presentation of the words finds its highpoint in the central role of the evangelist, who embodies the idea of music related to the text like no other character. The chorus is also used specifically to add emotional depth to the text. Whilst the shepherds are portrayed in folk-like manner by touchingly simple musical means, the chorus of angels is characterized by rousing praise and joy. Common to all parts of the Weihnachtshistorie is a lightness which, no matter how tangible and direct the music may be, presents every singer with a challenge.

The Weihnachts-Historie SWV 435 by Heinrich Schütz is in the tradition of historia settings which, unlike the later oratorios, were largely based on biblical accounts. Amongst the Christmas Histories, found from the early 17th century onwards, the mature Schütz’s composition is rightly regarded as the most important. Both the impressive setting of the Gospel account and the Intermedia, characterized by various different scorings and instrumentation, lend the historia a dramatic pull, and allow the 40-minute composition to become an exceptionally varied experience for the listener.

Schütz was well aware of the high demand the Intermedia placed on the instrumental forces, and allowed only the Evangelist’s account to be printed in 1664, as the Intermedia should only be performed “by outstanding ensembles” in a “fitting manner”. These only survived in manuscript; as a result, the Introduction and the 5th Intermedium survive incomplete and were added by Paul Horn in the style of Schütz’s time for our edition.

The tenth volume of the recording of Schütz’s complete works presents the Weihnachtshistorie SWV 435 (Christmas History). The well-known Christmas History is supplemented with additional pieces for the Christmas season, including the Magnificat SWV 468. Under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann, the Dresdner Kammerchor and the Dresdner Barockorchester perform together with renowned soloists such as Gerlinde Sämann, Marie Luise Werneburg and Georg Poplutz (as Evangelist). A coproduction with MDR Figaro.

The work comprises three parts which were to be sung at different points within the funeral service. The first and third parts in particular present choral singers with a challenge: solo movements alternate with choral movements, with almost every movement leading into the next without a break. There is certainly no time to consider which note comes next, or when!

Heinrich Schuetz composed the Musikalische Exequien SWV 279–281 for the funeral of his patron Prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuß 1635/1636. Of the three parts, which were to be performed during three different sections of the funeral service, the first part, in the form of a sacred concerto for choir and soloists, is based on the numerous biblical passages which, in accordance with the instructions given by the deceased were to be recited at the coffin which the deceased himself had designed during his lifetime. This part is followed by a motet for double choir based on the text of a sermon (“Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe“), and at the conclusion of the hymn of praise to Simeon (“Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren“), a choir apart from the main choir intones “Selig sind die Toten“ from heaven, so to speak. With this composition, written as a commission, Schuetz created one of the most artistic and heartfelt works of mourning ever written in the history of music.

A seventeenth century Passion “Radio Drama,” the sixth installment of the recording of Schütz’s complete works by the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann presents three powerful works for Passion. The St. Luke Passion SWV 480 unfolds a panorama inviting us to experience an intense, inward-looking pictorial reflection on Jesus’s Passion. The words of Luke the Evangelist are sung without accompaniment, the musical means skillfully reduced to a minimum. This narrative is interrupted by the choruses, creating dynamic emotional scenarios, clamoring, pleading, querying and raging: in this way, Schütz creates a form of Passion, a “radio drama” with a deeply moving intensification of events. The well-known “Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) SWV 478 is the first contribution of the viola da gamba player Hille Perl and her ensemble "The Sirius Viols" to the complete Schütz recording. The sophisticated structure of the work, the intense sensuality of the individual sections and the beauty of the musical message make the “Seven Last Words” a masterpiece. The third work on this CD, “Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott” (Have Mercy on me, O Lord God) SWV 447 for solo soprano accompanied by a consort of viols – a composition for the Good Friday service – represents a charming and appropriate complement to the “Seven Last Words”.
