A seventeenth century Passion “Radio Drama,” the sixth installment of the recording of Schütz’s complete works by the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann presents three powerful works for Passion. The St. Luke Passion SWV 480 unfolds a panorama inviting us to experience an intense, inward-looking pictorial reflection on Jesus’s Passion. The words of Luke the Evangelist are sung without accompaniment, the musical means skillfully reduced to a minimum. This narrative is interrupted by the choruses, creating dynamic emotional scenarios, clamoring, pleading, querying and raging: in this way, Schütz creates a form of Passion, a “radio drama” with a deeply moving intensification of events. The well-known “Sieben Worte Jesu am Kreuz” (The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross) SWV 478 is the first contribution of the viola da gamba player Hille Perl and her ensemble "The Sirius Viols" to the complete Schütz recording. The sophisticated structure of the work, the intense sensuality of the individual sections and the beauty of the musical message make the “Seven Last Words” a masterpiece. The third work on this CD, “Erbarm dich mein, o Herre Gott” (Have Mercy on me, O Lord God) SWV 447 for solo soprano accompanied by a consort of viols – a composition for the Good Friday service – represents a charming and appropriate complement to the “Seven Last Words”.

In the St. Matthew Passion, Johann Sebastian Bach created one of the most significant Protestant church music works. Frieder Bernius, together with the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart have now recorded this composition. These prize-winning experts of historically informed performance, with their filigree sound, master this monumental composition which portrays Christ’s passion with incomparable musical, spiritual and emotional intensity. With this new recording, the ensembles, together with renowned soloists including Tilman Lichdi, demonstrate once more that their fine, flexible lines make them ideal interpreters of Bach’s music.

The recording is also released as a limited deluxe version (Carus 83.286) which captivates by means of a particularly opulent presentation in a comprehensive digibook as well as excellent SACD recording technology.

Bernius’s recording is based on the new edition by the acknowledged Bach expert Klaus Hofmann, published by Carus-Verlag. It is no secret that Bach’s original score and parts were full of ambiguities and contradictions. Once again, Bernius sets new standards with respect to performance and artistry by following Hofmann’s approach, who presented his edition in accordance with current findings of Bach research, taking into account numerous impulses contributed by historical performance practice.

Louis Spohr's oratorio The Last Judgment is one of his most successful works and one of the most important contributions to the literature of the oratorio. The text is based on selected passages from Revelation in the New Testament, whose visions of death and eternity Spohr set most vividly in music. The work impresses through its masterful instrumentation, its careful, stunning use of chromaticism, its large-designed solo recitatives and, likewise, through the imposing choral movements, with their fervent, emotional and stirring dramatic content. Like no other ensemble, with this group of elite soloists, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and Die Deutsche Philharmonie Bremen, Frieder Bernius aptly succeeds in bringing to light the many facets of this dramatic oratorio.

Mit dem 2009 initiierten WIEGENLIEDER-Projekt konnte Carus für das Thema Singen mit Kindern eine breite Öffentlichkeit herstellen. Viele der überlieferten Lieder haben bei Eltern, Großeltern und Musikinteressierten ein neues Interesse geweckt. Das VOLKSLIEDER-Projekt führt diese Idee weiter.

Die Sammlung mit 77 der schönsten deutschen Volkslieder lädt ein, die Schönheit der Melodien und der Poesie der alten Liedtexte neu zu entdecken. Die Auswahl enthält viele bekannte Klassiker wie Der Mai ist gekommen, Die Gedanken sind frei oder Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust, aber auch unbekanntere Lieder. Zugleich möchte das Volkslieder-Projekt zum Singen und Musizieren mit Kindern anregen. Daher sind auch Lieder mit dabei, die ganz besonders Kinder ansprechen wie Heut kommt der Hans zu mir, freut sich die Lies oder Bruder Jakob.

Den Noten im Liederbuch sind Akkordsymbole zum Spiel an Klavier oder Gitarre beigegeben. Die beiliegende Mitsing-CD dient dem Kennenlernen der Lieder und ermutigt zum Mitsingen.

Für die VOLKSLIEDER hat der Illustrator Christoph Mett 20 doppelseitige, farbige Bilder gestaltet und zu jedem Lied eine passende Vignette entworfen. Seine Bilder laden dazu ein, sich auf einer weiteren, visuellen Ebene den Liedern zu nähern.

Sergei Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil op. 37 (also known as the "Vespers") is his last contribution to Russian Orthodox church music. The liturgical model for this piece is a worship service which is held on the evening preceding high feast days and consists of a sequence of prayers, readings and chants. Composed in 1915, in this work for a cappella choir Rachmaninoff succeeded in adapting ideas of late Romanticism to the monophonic liturgical chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since then, with its warm resplendant sound this work is regarded as a showpiece for large choirs. The emotional depth of this work is brought to the fore most impressively in the outstanding recording by the West German Radio Choir (WDR), under the direction of Nicolas Fink.

With his collection “Geistliche Lieder und Oden” (Sacred Songs and Odes), published in Leipzig in 1757, the poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert seems to have struck a chord in his time. There is no other explanation for the fact that so many settings of these texts were published in the very first years. With these Leipzig poems in our luggage, our journey of song begins with settings by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and leads all the way to Vienna and the compositions of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Gotthold Schwarz, for many years Kantor of St. Thomas’ Church Leipzig, will be accompanied by Gewandhaus organist Michael Schönheit on a Broadwood grand piano from 1805 – an instrument that would perfectly suit the period in which the songs were written. Ludwig van Beethoven himself owned a Broadwood grand piano built in 1807.

The overwhelming commitment on the part of all of the artists and their enthusiasm for the folk songs brought such an abundance of first-class material to the project so that a third CD could be released. Once again, first-rate soloists, such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Christiane Oelze und Roman Trekel sing on this CD. In addition, a number of young artists and many ensembles and choirs can be heard (ranging from scorings for the traditional four-voice choir via men’s or women’s choir as well as a children’s choir to even an historic recording by the Comedian Harmonists), who offer much variety with their many-faceted choral colors. The CD Volkslieder, Vol. 3 concludes this collection, which has presented the folk song in all of its many facets. All of the artists have approached the theme of the folk song in their own intimate way and have brought to it with their most personal interpretations of the songs. Whether an art song or from folklore, a solo song or an arrangement for choir, each approach to an interpretation of the folk song is equally valid. A song becomes a folk song if over a long period of time it remains rooted in the consciousness of the people, regardless of whether the melody, text and form undergo changes.

“Heinrich Schütz – The complete recording”: In the coming year a recording of the complete works of Heinrich Schütz under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann will be released on the Carus label. Together with the Dresdner Kammerchor and many renowned soloists these works, true to historical performance practice, will be presented. Thanks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schütz was able to pursue a three-year course of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo libro de Madrigali. Already in this, his Opus primus, Schütz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century. A coproduction with MDR Figaro.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger: Die Wasserfee 0,00 €

The works of the composer Josef Gabriel Rheinberger are mostly unknown today. In the later 19th century in mid-Europe he was quite well-known. Rheinberger’s compositional oeuvre is certainly not restricted to the realm of sacred music. He repeatedly occupied himself with the solo lied, publishing eleven lied collections containing altogether more than 100 songs between 1862 and 1890. In their musical language, Rheinberger’s lieder look for models not among his contemporaries, but in the early 19th century, in Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann. Rheinberger’s predominant use of the strophic form hearkens back even further, to the “Second Berlin Lied School” around Carl Friedrich Zelter. But, Where Schubert or Hugo Wolf would have emphasized the dark, despairing aspects of a poem, Rheinberger’s lieder display an almost Haydnesque clarity. Most of the songs recorded on the present CD Die Wasserfee (Water sprite) are first recordings.

The Ospedali in Venice had developed, over the course of their existence, from being purely charitable orphanages into renowned centres of Venetian musical culture. Far beyond the borders of Venice concerts given by musical young ladies trained at the Ospedali became celebrated during the 18th century. Sacred music written for female singers and instrumentalists, and performed by women in the churches, existed at that time only in Venice. This unique musical tradition became widely famous largely through the works of such notable composers as Vivaldi, Hasse, Porpora and Galuppi, who were active as teachers at the four "Ospedali grandi". Tonal beauty, almost floating choral passages and virtuosic solo sections create the especial fascination of the works presented on this CD "Le Grazie Veneziane". The soloists Maria Grazia Schiavo, Emanuela Galli, José Maria Lo Monaco and the ladies of the Vocal Concert Dresden, under the direction of Peter Kopp, recreate what was described euphorically as the "heavenly singing" at the Ospedali in the 18th century.
