  • The Lautten Compagney is one of the most renowned and creative baroque instrument ensembles in Germany. Their concerts, under the artistic direction of Wolfgang Katschner, have fascinated audiences for three decades. With their infectious joy in performing and their innovative concepts, these ‘early musicians’ effortlessly translate the musical language of the Baroque to the present. Whether it’s as a solo chamber ensemble or an opera orchestra, the ensemble is continually crossing boundaries and seeking out encounters with new sounds and other art forms. The ensemble has received numerous awards for its exciting musical collaborations. For its CD recording of the program Timeless, combining early Baroque music with works by Philip Glass, it received an ECHO Klassik award in 2010. And their winning the Rheingau Musik Prize 2012 was in recognition of the Lautten Compagney’s creative concert programming. The ensemble has a particular interest in music theater, especially the works of George Frideric Handel. Their performances of Handel’s Serse on a tour of New Zealand in 2011 took both audiences and press by storm. Their production of Rinaldo, a collaboration with the Milan puppet company Carlo Colla e Figli, was enthusiastically received by young and old alike. The Lautten Compagney is a regular guest at leading national and international concert halls and festivals, including the Konzerthaus and Radialsystem V in Berlin, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Frauenkirche Dresden, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Vienna Musikverein, Warsaw Philharmonic, An unmistakable sound, breathtaking blend, tremendous sense of musical assurance and a good portion of charm and wit are amarcord’s special hallmarks. The group’s extremely diverse and wide-ranging repertoire encompasses medieval songs, Renaissance madrigals and masses, compositions and cycles of works from the European Romantic and 20th century as well as a cappella arrangements of folk songs from all over the world, and well-known rock, pop, soul, and jazz songs. The ensemble has won prizes at numerous international competitions. In 2002 amarcord won the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb. Alongside the Gewandhaus Orchestra and St. Thomas’s Choir, amarcord is one of the most important representatives of the music city of Leipzig at home and abroad. The group is a frequent guest at leading music festivals. Numerous concert tours have taken the singers to over fifty countries and to almost every continent in the world. In association with the Goethe-Institut they have given guest performances in Australia, South East Asia, the Middle East, Russia, Africa, and Central America. The International Festival for Vocal Music “a cappella” (www.a-cappella-festival.de), inaugurated by amarcord in 1997, has become one of the most important festivals of its kind under the group’s artistic direction. Numerous CDs impressively document the different facets of amarcord’s repertoire, and have won many prizes such as ECHO Klassik (2010, 2012), the International Classical Music Award, Supersonic Award and the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award.

  • The German vocal ensemble “The Singphoniker” was founded three decades ago by six students at the Music Conservatory in Munich. This was at a time when, after years of oblivion – thanks to Eberhard Fechner’s documentary film – the Comedian Harmonists were rediscovered and reassessed, with their fantastic ensemble singing and inimitable arrangements. At the same time, the English group the King´s Singers began to attract a wide public in Germany with their mixed programs ranging from madrigals through contemporary music to close harmony. Right from the beginning The Singphoniker were aware that simply imitating other groups would not bring pleasure or success in the long term. Rather, the question was: is there a German tradition of vocal chamber music for male voices – apart from the narrow German patriotism then commonly found in amateur male voice choirs – which should be fostered and continued, and which is worth incorporating within the overall music of our time? Yes, indeed! The archives are full of such hidden treasures. With curiosity and in the spirit of discovery, we set off on a fascinating journey which has led to many surprises even among experts. Works such as Schubert’s part songs, for example, have formed the center of a German Romantic tradition for the Singphoniker. It is astonishing what we have discovered in terms of wonderful compositions – from Lasso to Orff (both with long associations to the Singphonic home of Munich) and from Grieg to Villa Lobos, et al. Finding their way between the riches of earlier German repertoire, the current international vocal ensemble scene, the revived and rediscovered German tradition and exciting contemporary music, the Singphoniker have developed a wideranging repertoire and an unmistakable profile among the few ensembles of vocal soloists on the international scene. The inclusion of the piano for all musical styles and periods provides an added ingredient in the group’s artistic profile and distinctiveness. Numerous prizes and awards and fruitful partnerships with many distinguished artists – including Gert Westphal, Ute Lemper and Angelika Kirchschlager – reflect their good reputation. Similarly, they work regularly with international orchestras (most recently the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Orquesta Nacional de España) and conductors (including Sir Lawrence Foster, Paul Daniel, Ulf Schirmer, and Howard Griffiths). A whole range of renowned contemporary composers have made exciting contributions to the ensemble’s repertoire. The members of the current group maintain this tradition with continued enthusiasm, and they are finding great pleasure in discovering new repertoire. The Singphonikers’ ensemble sound – and they have consistently rejected all technical means of enhancing this – is considered warmly sonorous, from finely balanced to cohesively powerful in equal measure, reflecting all the facets of a purely male-voice scoring from the deepest darkness to the brightest light. • Peter Schindler, born in 1960, is a composer, pianist, organist, author and producer. He studied school music, composition and organ, as well as jazz and popular music at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Part of his compositional output includes lieder, sing-spiele, and musicals for children and youths. His special motto for this: “For all children under 100!” But also to present old children’s songs in new arrangements is of special interest for him. Why shouldn’t the cuckoo and the donkey dance the cha cha, or grandmother rock in the henhouse? Plus d'information sur la personne
  • Frieder Bernius’s work has earned great worldwide recognition. He is in demand internationally as a conductor and as a teacher. His principal artistic collaborators are the ensembles he founded himself, the Kammerchor Stuttgart, the Barockorchester Stuttgart, the Hofkapelle Stuttgart and the Klassische Philharmonie Stuttgart. As a guest conductor, he has collaborated repeatedly with, for example, the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester and the Streicherakademie Bozen. Great stylistic versatility is Frieder Bernius’s hallmark. Whether he conducts vocal works by Monteverdi, Bach, Händel, Mozart, Beethoven, Fauré and Ligeti, stage music by Mendelssohn or symphonies by Haydn, Burgmüller and Schubert, his work always aims for a sound that is at once unmistakably personal and at the same time oriented towards the original period sound ideal. He devotes himself equally to the rediscovery of 18th century operas and to first performances of contemporary compositions. He is particularly interested in the musical history of southwestern Germany. Carus-Verlag has awarded Frieder Bernius a Golden CD for his complete recording of the sacred music of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The award was presented to him during the German Choir Festival in Stuttgart 2016. The sale of over 250,000 recordings, which has been acclaimed with a number of awards, has made a not insignificant contribution to what today is the obvious presence of Mendelssohn's complete œuvre in the concert repertoire.
