Homilius: Johannespassion. carus music

Gottfried August Homilius

Passion selon saint Jean

Der Fromme stirbt

HoWV I.4

Description

The oratorio Passions by Homilius are amongst the last compositions of this kind from the 18th century. The role of the chorus in the "St John Passion" is largely restricted to the chorales and crowd choruses, but in the latter, Homilius shows precisely why he was particularly praised as a choral composer. The final movement captures the singular importance of the crucifixion in the Gospel of St John, emphasizing this by an unusual transition from A minor to an almost celebratory A major.
