    O God, from heaven look on us
    And show us thy compassion;
    forsaken is thy band of saints,
    the remnant of thy portion!
    Thy word is treated with contempt,
    the light of faith no more shines bright
    among thy mortal children.

    2 Recitativo

    They teach deception and untruth,
    opposed to God and to his own true faith,
    which their untutored wits do fashion.
    O sorrow that offends thy congregation:
    this serves instead of thine own word.
    For one seeks after this, another that,
    and foolish idle talk is all they want.
    Like whited sepulchres they glitter,
    which, though they may appear unstained,
    decay and rot have deep within them,
    And only filth have to adorn them.

    Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein
    und lass dichs doch erbarmen,
    wie wenig sind der Heilgen dein,
    verlassen sind wir Armen!
    Dein Wort man nicht lässt haben wahr,
    der Glaub ist auch verloschen gar
    bei allen Menschenkindern.

    2 Recitativo (Solo T)

    Sie lehren eitel falsche List,
    was wider Gott und seine Wahrheit ist,
    und was der eigen Witz erdenket,
    o Jammer, der die Kirche schmerzlich kränket,
    das muss anstatt der Bibel stehn.
    Der eine wählet dies, der andre das,
    die törichte Vernunft ist ihr Kompass,
    sie gleichen denen Totengräbern,
    die, ob sie zwar von außen schön,
    nur Stank und Moder in sich fassen,
    und lauter Unflat sehen lassen.

    The cantata, composed in 1724 is based on the eponymous chorale, the main hymn for the first Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The content of the hymn is closely connected to the Parable of which Jesus spoke at the great Lord’s Supper, this being the gospel of that Sunday from the 14th chapter of Luke. It is not too far removed from this story, with its consternation concerning the staying away of the invited guests and the flimsiness of their excuses, to the source of the chorale, Psalm 12, with its lament about the decline of the righteous and the supremacy of evil, but also its faith in divine help: “Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men ...” The hymn on Psalm 12 “Salvum me fac, Domine,” which was first verified in 1524, belongs to a series of “several psalms, to sacred songs / made German / by Dr. Martinum Luther,” as was printed in hymnals at that time. Luther’s six-verse adaptation follows the Psalmist’s thoughts very closely, but also expands and elucidates upon the original. Luther derived his first verse from “Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful

    Die 1724 komponierte Kantate fußt auf dem gleichnamigen Choral, dem Hauptlied des 2. Trinitatissonntags. Inhaltlich steht das Lied in engem Konnex zum Evangelium des Sonntags, dem zu Jesu Tischreden gehörigen Gleichnis vom großen Abendmahl im 14. Kapitel bei Lukas. Von dieser Erzählung mit ihrer Betroffenheit über das Wegbleiben der geladenen Gäste und das Fadenscheinige ihrer Entschuldigungen ist der Weg nicht weit zu der Quelle des Chorals, dem 12. Psalm und seiner Klage über die Abnahme der Frommen und die Übermacht des Bösen, aber auch seinem Vertrauen auf göttliche Hilfe: „Hilf Herr! die Heiligen haben abgenommen, und der Gläubigen ist wenig unter den Menschenkindern ...“ Das 1524 zuerst nachweisbare Lied über den 12. Psalm „Salvum me fac, Domine“ gehört zu einer Folge von „etlichen Psalm, zu geistlichen liedern / deutsch gemacht / Durch Dr. Martinum Luther“, wie es in Gesangbüchern der Zeit heißt. Luthers sechsstrophige Nachdichtung schließt sich eng an den Gedankengang des Psalmisten an, erweitert und verdeutlicht jedoch diese Vorlage. Seine erste Strophe gewinnt Luther aus dem „Hilf Herr! die Heiligen haben abgenommen und der Gläubigen ist wenig

    Salvation sure has come to man,
    God’s grace at last prevaileth;
    without true faith no human plan,
    no mortal work availeth;
    true faith on Christ is founded fast,
    from Christ flow all our blessings vast,
    Christ’s mercy never faileth.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

    God gave to us the law, but we are all to weak,
    With steady courage to obey it.
    Thn paths of sin we ever seek,
    and none is counted righteous;
    our souls, by flesh contaminated
    may not from sin be separated.
    But we should all obey the law,
    contrite, as if each in a mirror saw
    how illbehaved his nature made him grow:
    how loath his feeble strength to know.
    By his own might is no man able his evil practices master,

    Es ist das Heil uns kommen her
    von Gnad‘ und lauter Güte;
    die Werk‘ die helfen nimmermehr,
    sie mögen nicht behüten;
    der Glaub‘ sieht Jesum Christum an,
    der hat g‘nug für uns all getan,
    er ist der Mittler worden.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

    Gott gab uns ein Gesetz,
    doch waren wir zu schwach,
    dass wir es hätten halten können.
    Wir gingen nur den Sünden nach,
    kein Mensch war fromm zu nennen;
    der Geist blieb an dem Fleische kleben
    und wagte nicht zu widerstreben.
    Wir sollten im Gesetze gehen
    und dort als wie in einem Spiegel sehn,
    wie unsre Natur unartig sei:
    und dennoch blieben wir dabei.

    The cantata for the 6th Sunday after Trinity Es ist das Heil uns kommen her BWV 9, belongs formally to the annual cycle of chorale cantatas of 1724/25, but it clearly dates from a time when Bach had long since completed most of his Leipzig repertoire of cantatas. It was probably written for 20 July 1732. The reason for this probably originated with a visit which Bach and his wife paid to Cöthen about 16 July 1724, so that no new cantata was composed for that Sunday. Bach did, however, keep the libretto, by an unknown author, so that he could set it to music when an opportunity arose, and the gap in his cycle of chorale cantatas was later filled by the present work. A further performance of it is known to have taken place during the last decade of Bach’s life.

    The Gospel for the Sunday in question (Matt. 5:20–26) speaks, in words of the Sermon on the Mount, about Christian understanding of righteousness as being more important than outward compliance with worldly laws. On the basis of the Reformation hymn text of the same name by Paul Speratus (1523) the writer of the cantata fashioned a libretto which shows how consciousness of the

    Die Kantate für den 6. Sonntag nach Trinitatis Es ist das Heil uns kommen her BWV 9 gehört formal zum Jahrgang der Choralkantaten von 1724/25, entstand aber erst deutlich später zu einer Zeit, da Bach die Hauptarbeit an seinem Leipziger Kantatenrepertoire längst abgeschlossen hatte, wahrscheinlich für den 20. Juli 1732. Der Grund dafür war ein Aufenthalt Bachs mit seiner Frau um den 16. Juli 1724 in Köthen, sodass für diesen Sonntag zunächst keine neue Kantate komponiert wurde. Das Libretto des unbekannten Verfassers hielt er jedoch so lange zurück, bis ein erneuter Anlass zur Vertonung bestand und heute zumindest diese Lücke innerhalb des Zyklus’ der Choralkantaten geschlossen ist. Eine weitere Aufführung des Werkes zu Bachs Lebzeiten ist für sein letztes Lebensjahrzehnt nachweisbar.

    Das Evangelium des Sonntages (Matth. 5,20–26) behandelt im Rahmen der Bergpredigt das christliche Gerechtigkeitsverständnis gegenüber weltlicher Gesetzestreue als rein äußerliche Rechtschaffenheit. Auf Grundlage des, bezogen auf die Kantate, gleichnamigen reformatorischen Liedtextes von Paul Speratus (1523) schuf der Textdichter ein Libretto, in dem das Bewusstsein über das
