Le sous-titre de cette messe lui vient du traitement soliste et indépendant de l'orgue au cours du Benedictus. Cette messe KV 259 témoigne ainsi d'une tradition qui remonte aux années 1730, et où se sont illustrés des compositeurs essentiellement viennois, comme Georg Reuter, Joseph Haydn, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf ou Johann Baptist Vanhal.

| 1756-1791As the son of the deputy Kapellmeister to the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop, Mozart was constantly surrounded by church music in his youth. On his travels Mozart became familiar with Italian church music, and later in Vienna he studied the works of Bach and Handel. After moving to Vienna he was faced with the new challenges of composing opera and piano concertos, and significantly the “C Minor Mass” KV 427, the greatest sacred work of the first Vienna years, remained unfinished. The last period of his life again shows a change of direction to church music: Mozart successfully applied to succeed the terminally ill Leopold Hoffmann as Kapellmeister at St Stephen's Cathedral, but he was unable to take up the position as he died before Hoffmann. A gem such as the “Ave verum” KV 618 and the incomplete Requiem KV 626 give us an idea of what Mozart might have achieved as a composer of sacred music if he had taken up this important position. Mozarts „Orgelsolomesse” in C-Dur, die ihren Namen wohl durch den verstärkt solistischen Einsatz der Orgel im Benedictus verdankt, ist vom Typus her eine Missa brevis ganz und gar im Gusto seines Chefs Fürsterzbischof Graf Hieronymus Coloredo, der verfügte, dass unter seinem Zelebrat ein musikalisch gestalteter Gottesdienst nur 3/4 Stunden dauern durfte. Berücksichtigt man aber den Einbezug der Trompeten und der Pauken, so entsteht leicht der Eindruck einer Missa brevis et solemnis. Arienartige Passagen kennt diese Messe nicht. Alle SolosteIlen sind ensemblemäßig komponiert, daher durchaus auch von versierten Chorsängerinnen und Chorsängern zu singen (das schont die Chorkasse). Im Großen und Ganzen eine Messvertonung, die in den Herzen vieler einen Platz gefunden hat und so manchen festlichen Gottesdienst musikalisch begleiten kann, der dann sicherlich auch länger als 45 Minuten dauern darf. Ausgabentechnisch ein Produkt aus dem Hause Carus; ohne „Fehl und Tadel”.

The subtitle comes from the unusually elaborate solo writing for the organ in the Benedictus. Another feature of this mass is the brief (84 bars) Credo. There was some controversy about this mass because Mozart’s father classified it as the brevis type, but a title page contained the word ”Solemnis;” many of the parts found were not in Mozart’s handwriting, so until recently it was not certain whether they may have been added; also, there were some brief cuts indicated and it is believed those were from Mozart. This 14-minute mass is very attractive and serves especially well as a concert work.
