  • Soft and sweet thro' ether winging,
    sound the harmonies of life,
    their immortal flowers springing
where the soul is free from strife.

Peace and joy are sweetly blended
    like the waves' alternate play;
    what for masterly contended
learns to yield and to obey.

    When on music's mighty pinion
souls of men to heaven rise,
    then doth vanish earth's dominion,
man is native to the skies,

calm without, and joy within us
is the bliss for which we long.
If of art the magic win us,
joy and calm are turn'd to song.

With its tide of joy unbroken,
    music's flood our life surrounds,
    what a mastermind hath spoken
    thro' eternity resounds.

    Oh receive, ye joy invited,
    all its blessings without guile,
when to love is pow'r united,
    then the Gods approving smile.

    unsers Lebens Harmonien,
    und dem Schönheitssinn entschwingen
    Blumen sich, die ewig blühn,

    Fried und Freude gleiten freundlich
    wie der Wellen Wechselspiel.
Was sich drängte rauh und feindlich,
    ordnet sich zu Hochgefühl.

    Wenn der Töne Zauber walten
    und des Wortes Weihe spricht,
    muss sich Herrliches gestalten,
    Nacht und Stürme werden Licht,

    äußre Ruhe, inn’re Wonne,
    herrschen für den Glücklichen.
    Doch der Künste Frühlingssonne
    lässt aus Leiden Licht entsteh’n.

    Großes, das ins Herz gedrungen,
blüht dann neu und schön empor,
    hat ein Geist sich aufgeschwungen,
    hallt ihm stets ein Geisterchor.

Nehmt denn hin, ihr schönen Seelen,
    froh die Gaben schöner Kunst.
Wenn sich Lieb und Kraft vermählen,
    lohnt dem Menschen Göttergunst.

The Fantasie für das Pianoforte mit Begleitung des ganzen Orchesters und Chor [Fantasy for the Pianoforte with the Accompaniment of full Orchestra and Choir], as the German first edition of Ludwig van Beethoven’s op. 80 of 1811 is called, leads a peculiar shadowy existence that neither does justice to its musical quality nor to its significance in music history. Undoubtedly, the very title of the work is a paradox, for a fantasy for ensemble contradicts the idea of an entity shaped by improvisation. In a way, “Introduction and Theme with Variations for Piano, Orchestra, Soloists and Choir” would probably be the more accurate title. At first glance, the combination of orchestra, piano and singing voices also seems unusual. But around 1800, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart’s Scena and Rondo Ch’io mi scordi di te – Non temer amato bene K. 505 from 1786, for example, was an extraordinarily popular concert piece. The by now predominantly negative evaluation of the lyrics, which “only” came from an amateur poet, as well as some misleading statements by Beethoven about the work and its premiere have contributed to the

Beethoven’s setting of Meeres Stille und Glückliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 belongs to those compositions in the history of music which cannot be categorized unequivocally. This work for four-part mixed choir and symphony orchestra could most closely be described as a “choral ode” – a genre which was preferably associated with poetry of a sophisticated literary standard and whose form is strongly determined by the text. Beethoven’s work, too, is entirely suffused by the underlying text in two sections by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The pair of poems “Meeres Stille” and “Glückliche Fahrt” were written in 1795 and first published in the Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796 which was edited by Friedrich Schiller. The musical setting is based on a version revised by Goethe and presumably found by Beethoven in the Cotta edition Goethe’s Werke. The becalmed sea is here described in regularly alternating seven-syllable and eight-syllable trochaic lines; the prosperous voyage, on the other hand, is set in restless compound meters with a flowing movement which evokes associations of

With the formal structure of his only oratorio Christus am Ölberge (The Mount of Olives) Ludwig van Beethoven consciously continued the tradition of the Italian Passion oratorio of the 18th century. At the same time, it is unmistakable that Beethoven was striving to make his personal mark on the genre of the German-language oratorio, which was flourishing as a result of the successful Viennese performances of Joseph Haydn’s The Creation and The Seasons which had taken place shortly before. In addition, the work is oriented towards contemporary opera, a fact that is also reflected in the circumstances of its creation and in the libretto.

Creation of the First Version and Libretto

At the beginning of 1803, Beethoven was appointed house composer of the Theater an der Wien, which had only been opened in June 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder. He was even given official lodgings in the theater, where he lived together with his brother Karl. In addition to conducting the orchestra, this obligation also included the possibility of organizing concerts of his own. Since opera performances were traditionally not

Jahrhunderts an.

In the picture of Beethoven we have today, the composer’s religiosity does not necessarily come to the fore. Compared with his predecessors Haydn and Mozart, he wrote only very few sacred works. However, we should not forget that a whole series of Beethoven’s instrumental works – such as the String Quartet Op. 132 with its Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit (Song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to God) and the 9th Symphony with its choral finale – also display religious dimensions. Beethoven was a deeply religious person who addressed religious themes intellectually as well as seeking and finding an emotional compensation in religion for what fate had dealt him.

Although the two masses he composed were both commissions, for Beethoven they represented at the same time a personal matter and an artistic

Although Beethoven was a deeply religious person who was much preoccupied with theologicalphilosophical matters, he composed only a few sacred works. One of these is his Missa solemnis, which is generally regarded as a major work of Catholic church music. During the four years he took to complete it, it developed into a monumental work which goes far beyond liturgical boundaries. It is no coincidence that the premiere took place on 26 March 1824 in the old Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg and the work was described in the program leaflet there as an oratorio. However, the Missa solemnis had originally been planned as an entirely liturgical composition, namely as a festive mass for the enthronement of Beethoven’s great patron Archduke Rudolph as Archbishop of Olmütz (Olomouc) on 9 March 1820.

Nevertheless, too much significance should not be attached to this particular occasion. Beethoven, who was above all concerned with the further development of his art, went about his work as a composer far too consciously to simply have composed such a mass merely because his patron was elected archbishop. He was attracted to tackling

  • Ludwig van Beethoven was without doubt one of the most influential composers in the history of music. His works formed the culmination of many genres – particularly instrumental – of Viennese classicism, and laid the foundation for the following decades. But Beethoven’s vocal works set standards too: the late Missa Solemnis is one of the most impressive choral works of its time; but his earlier Mass in C also opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical text, and set the benchmark for the further development in the composition of the mass. And with the final chorus of the Ninth Symphony, the setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy, Beethoven created one of the most frequently-performed and best known choral pieces of all, writing a timeless musical memorial to himself.
