    1 Coro

Take from us, Lord, you faithful God,
    the punishment and heavy rod,
which is for sin we all have done,
    deserved full well by ev’ryone.
Protect from war and awful dearth,
from plagues and fire and great distress!

    2 Aria (Tenore)

Deal, O Lord, not through your judgement
    with your evil, sinful servant,
keep the sword of foes at peace!
    God almighty, hear our pleading.
May we not through sinful deeds
    like Jerusalem be falling.

    3 Recitativo (Soprano)

O Lord God, through your faithfulness
will all our land have peace and restfulness.
When threat’ning fate like storms appears,
then we cry out, most gracious God,
    to you in all our fears;

    1 Coro

Nimm von uns Herr, du treuer Gott,
die schwere Straf und große Not,
die wir mit Sünden ohne Zahl
    verdienet haben allzumal.
Behüt für Krieg und teurer Zeit,
    Seuchen, Feur und großem Leid.

    2 Aria (Tenore)

    Handle nicht nach deinen Rechten
    mit uns bösen Sündenknechten,
lass das Schwert der Feinde ruhn!
    Höchster, höre unser Flehen,
dass wir nicht durch sündlich Tun
    wie Jerusalem vergehen!

    3 Recitativo (Soprano)

Ach!

You shall be weeping and crying,
but all the world is rejoicing.
You will be filled with grieving pain,
yet all your sorrow soon will to gladness be changed forever

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

Who should not be with sadness overhelmed,
when our Beloved from us is taken?
Our soul’s delight, the refuge of the burdened,
    does not regard our suff’ring.

    3 Aria (Alto)

    No healing help is found beside you;
    I search throughout all Gilead.
Who heals the wounds of all my sinning,
and is here nothing that can help?
If you do hide, then I am dying.
May grace abide, O hear my plea!
You seek but never my destruction,
therefore, with hope my heart is filled.

    1 Coro e Basso

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

Wer sollte nicht in Klagen untergehn,
wenn uns der Liebste wird entrissen?
Der Seelen Heil, die Zuflucht kranker Herzen
    acht nicht auf unsre Schmerzen.

    3 Aria (Alto)

Kein Arzt ist außer dir zu finden,
    ich suche durch ganz Gilead;
wer heilt die Wunden meiner Sünden,
weil man hier keinen Balsam hat?
Verbirgst du dich, so muss ich sterben.
    Erbarme dich, ach, höre doch!
Du suchest ja nicht mein Verderben,

Let our heart be rejoicing and with our tongue speak his praises. For the Lord has done great things unto us.

    2 Aria (Tenore)

All my thoughts and all my senses

raise to heaven all as one
and behold what God has done!
    God became a man alone,
so that we can be his own.

    3 Recitativo (Basso)

There is no one like you, O Lord, and your name is most high; you show by your works your greatness.

    4 Aria (Alto)

O Lord, what is a child of man,
that you with pain seek his salvation?
    A worm, a cursed creation,

but yet your child, whom soul and mind

    4 Aria (Alto)

Ach Herr, was ist ein Menschenkind,
dass du sein Heil so schmerzlich suchest?
    Ein Wurm, den du verfluchest,

    1 Coro

    Praise, O Jerusalem, thy God,
    praise, O Zion, praise the Lord;
for He strengtheneth the stronghold, which protects thee
and blesseth all thy children in thee,
He maketh peace within thy borders.

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

O blessed land of heart’s desire!
where God Himself has set His hearth and fire.
    Could clearer proof be shown
of favor than that God should make our land His own?
How could a city win from Him a richer blessing?
Within thy walls are truth and mercy met together,
    within thee righteousness and peace
have met and kissed each other,
    nor weary so to do;
for did not God so promise He would enable by His grace?
    And so we sing anew:
O blessed land! thrice blessed place!

    2 Recitativo (Tenore)

    1 Choral

    Christ Jesus praise we ev’ryone,
    the virgin maiden Mary’s son
as far as rays of sun extend,

    2 Aria (Tenore)

Thou man whom God created cannot know
nor understand, but only wonder show,
that he thro’ man can compass man’s salvation.
He, who from chaos hath the world erected,
altho’ thou be despised and once rejected,

    3 Recitativo (Alto)

The grace of God is all unbounded,
nor does it keep it self by Heaven’s wall surrounded,

What wonder, that at this our understanding fails,

    1 Coro

God, as thy Name is, so, so is thy praise to where the earth doth end.

    2 Aria (Tenore)

Lord, as far as clouds in heaven
spreads thy glory and thy Name.
    Ev’ry creature drawing breath,
ev’ry soul from birth to death,
    God Almighty magnifieth.

    3 Recitativo (Alto)

Thou Name of Jesus, sweetest rest,
    when I am sore oppressed!
    Thou art my consolation,
why need I then fear trial or tribulation?
Thou art my banner fair, my tower high,
    to thee I fly,
    when evil foes are nigh.
Thou art my hope, my beacon bright,
my Helper, and my heart’s delight,
    the precious gift to cheer
my life throughout the coming year.

    1 Coro

    2 Aria (Tenore)

Herr, so weit die Wolken gehen,
    gehet deines Namens Ruhm.
    Alles, was die Lippen rührt,
    alles, was noch Odem führt,
wird dich in der Macht erhöhen.

    3 Recitativo (Alto)

    Du süßer Jesus-Name du,
    in dir ist meine Ruh,
du bist mein Trost auf Erden,
    wie kann denn mir
    im Kreuze bange werden?
Du bist mein festes Schloss und mein Panier,
    da lauf ich hin,
    wenn ich verfolget bin.
Du bist mein Leben und mein Licht,
    mein Ehre, meine Zuversicht,
    mein Beistand in Gefahr

    Sound forth, now with singing,
    and strings, join the chorus!
    O season most glorious!
As temples to serve him God deigns to prepare us.

    2 Recitativo (Basso)

    He who loves me keeps all my commandments;
and my Father too shall love him,
and so both of us shall come then
and make in him our dwelling.

    3 Aria (Basso)

    O most holy Trinity,
    O great God of glories,
come in time of grace to be
    and return inspire us.
Come now, to the hearts that own thee,
though they may be poor and small:
    come now, come and let us call upon thee;
    come, return unto us all.

    Wer mich liebet,

komm und kehre bei uns ein!

The cantata Erschallet, ihr Lieder (Sound forth, now with singing) BWV 172, by Johann Sebastian Bach was written for the Feast of Pentecost, and was first performed at Weimar on 20 May 1714. It was therefore one of the first works which Bach wrote at the Court of Weimar following his promotion to the position of Konzertmeister, which obliged him to provide “new pieces monthly.” The words were by the Weimar Consistorial Secretary Salomo Franck (1659–1725). This cantata appears to have been one of Bach’s favorite works, because it was later performed several times at Cöthen and at Leipzig, where it was integrated into the first annual cycle of cantatas. Owing to the loss of the original score and the number of performances, which necessitated adaptation to comply with local conditions,

    Ulrich Leisinger

Mai 1714 in Weimar.

    2 Aria (Alto)

Come, lead me on, I long to be
    in heaven’s verdant pasture!
My heart cries out both day and night,
    my shepherd, dearest master.

    3 Recitativo (Tenore)

    Where can you be?
    Oh, where are you hiding?
    Oh, leave me not alone!
    I long for you

    4 Aria (Tenore)

    I seem to see
    you come to greet me,
you enter by the open door.
With faith I welcome you and greet you,
be now my shepherd ever more.
