Johann Michael Haydn’s oeuvre includes more than thirty works in Latin or German for two or three descants, composed for his “dear choirboys” of the Salzburg ‘Kapellhaus’. The first setting of the ordinary in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777. It was initially intended for the Commemoration of the Holy Innocents on 28 December, when the chapel boys celebrated their principal feast day.

| 1737-1806Johann Michael Haydn a travaillé à partir de 1763 à la prestigieuse cour princière de Salzbourg. Au cours des 43 années qu'il y a passées, il a jeté un pont stylistique entre le classicisme précoce et le Biedermeier musical. Conformément à ses obligations de service, Haydn a contribué à pratiquement tous les genres cultivés dans la liturgie catholique : la connaissance de la fonction liturgique et l'interprétation musicale des textes religieux caractérisent la musique sacrée de Haydn. Johann Michael Haydn a d'abord été considéré par ses contemporains comme étant au même niveau que Joseph Haydn. | 1966-2015Armin Kircher studied church music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Until his death he was Director of the Church Music Department of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, and since 1992 he had been administrative director of the Österreichische Werkwoche für Kirchenmusik (Austrian Week for Church Music). He was also Director of Music at St Peter's Abbey, Salzburg and organist at the Cajetan Church in Salzburg. The collections he edited for the Catholic liturgy have become established standard works, in particular the choral collections Chorbuch Mozart • Haydn, the Chorbuch Kirchenjahr (Choirbook for the Church Year) and publications for organ and choir for the new Catholic hymnbook Gotteslob. Das Stück ist mit ca. 24 Minuten Aufführungsdauer recht umfangreich für sein Genre und von einer außerordentlichen Spielfreude geprägt - für Chöre mit Männermangel ein absoluter Geheimtipp.

Die Missa Sancti Aloysii entstand 1888 für seine Kapellknaben, ablesbar an der Besetzung für drei Oberstimmen – oder besser zwei, denn die Altstimmen (Solo wie Chor) in dieser Messe vermitteln höchst delikat zwischen der Tradition des barocken „Bassettchen”-Satzes und einer polyphonen Führung von großer Meisterschaft.
