Chant de deuil
Have you seen him hov'ring near MWV F 31 (op. 116), 1845
The composition was written in 1845 at the request of the young occasional poet Friedrich Aulenbach for the funeral of a singer friend who had died. Two sources survive for this work, a heavily-corrected composition autograph, and a posthumous first printed edition of 1869. These differ from each other so considerably, that it seems plausible that a revision was made between the two, but it is not known who this was by. As the fair copy sent to Aulenbach does not survive, it cannot be entirely ruled out that the first printed edition may have been based on this, and thus the revision was made by Mendelssohn.
This edition contains both versions.
