Miina Härma was one of the first Estonians to study organ and composition at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory (1883–1890). Alongside her compositional activities she worked as a music teacher and was editor-inchief of the monthly magazine “Eesti Muusika Kuukirja” (Estonian Musical Month). In 1939 she was appointed honorary doctor of the University of Tartu and honorary professor of the Tallinn Conservatory.
