Der Messiah des schwedischen Komponisten Sven-David Sandström wurde vom Oregon Bach Festival und der Internationalen Bachakademie Stuttgart zum Händel-Jahr 2009 gemeinsam in Auftrag gegeben. Gemäß dem Wunsch der Auftraggeber beruht das Werk auf dem englischen Libretto von Charles Jennens, das Händel vor über 260 Jahren in seinem berühmten Oratorium vertont hatte. Große Expressivität und orchestrale Farbigkeit charakterisieren diesen Messiah des 21. Jahrhunderts, in dem für Sandström Modernität und Schönklang keinen Gegensatz darstellen – entsprechend seinem künstlerischem Credo: „Meine Musik soll beim ersten Hören erfassbar sein und die Menschen berühren!“
