Farewell to the Forest O valleys wide, O heights, O beautiful, green woods,
you devout dwelling place of my delight and woe.
Out there, ever deceived, the busy world does roar;
embrace me for the last time with your arches, green tent.
In woodland there is written a quiet and solemn word of doing right and loving,
what mankind values most.
I have faithfully read those words, simple and true.
And throughout my whole being they were unutterably clear.
Soon now I shall leave you, a stranger going afar,
to see on busy streets life’s drama unfold;
and in the midst of my life the power of your earnestness will raise me up,
in my solitude, so that my heart will not age.
