O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad
Cantate pour la fête de la Trinité BWV 165, 1715(?)
The cantata "O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad" (O Holy spirit’s solemn rite) BWV 165 is one of Bach's earliest cantata compositions and was presumably first performed in the Weimar Schlosskirche for Trinity Sunday in 1715. With a simple instrumentation of only strings and basso continuo (including bassoon), the cantata offers an alternative to the later Leipzig cantatas for the Feast of the Holy Trinity, also with regard to the vivid interpretation of the text in the librettos by Salomon Franck. In the two expressive recitatives and the three distinctively different arias, Bach repeatedly emphasizes the central words of the text, which focuses on the meaning of the rebirth of the spirit through baptism.

O Holy Spirit’s solemn rite!The sininfected birth of Adam’s cursed children
incurred God’s fearsome wrath, our death and our destruction.
All that is born of Adam’s flesh,
is naught but flesh, by evil foully stricken,
is poisoned and polluted.
What peace is found in Christ!
Baptized with water and the Spirit
is now a child of grace and mercy.
He clothes himself with Christ,
in silken whiteness stands, now guiltless,
now clad with Christ’s own blood, the purple cloak of glory,
by this baptism blessed....

Wie selig ist ein Christ!
Er wird im Geist- und Wasserbade
ein Kind der Seligkeit und Gnade.
Er ziehet Christum an
und seiner Unschuld weiße Seide,
er wird mit Christi Blut, der Ehren Purpurkleide,...
