aus: Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen, 1. Akt, 4. Szene. Der päpstliche Sitz ist nach Avignon verlegt worden. In Rom sorgt die Willkür verfeindeter Adelsfamilien für Unruhe und Unsicherheit im Volk. Als Irene, die Schwester Rienzis, von den Patrizierfamilien der Orsini und Colonna entführt werden soll und selbst der päpstliche Legat nicht mehr schlichten kann, eskaliert die Situation. Erst das imponierende Auftreten Rienzis bewirkt, dass die Streitenden ihren Kampf außerhalb der Stadt verlegen. Rienzi verspricht
den Bürgern Roms nach antikem Vorbild die Freiheit. Aus dem Lateran erklingt Orgel und ein Chor.

Start of years as a journeyman: Konigsberg, Riga, Paris, then as a court music director in Dresden, as a fugitive revolutionary in Zurich and finally as a protege of King Ludwig II. in Munich and Bayreuth, death in Venice in 1883.
