Carl Heinrich Graun Der Tod Jesu

Read and write feedback
Since its first performance in Berlin in 1755, Carl Heinrich Graun’s “empfindsame” (sensible) Passion Cantata Der Tod Jesu, with a libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler had long been one of the most frequently performed works in this genre. Until the end of the 19th century this work was able to maintain its position in the repertoire of numerous oratorio societies and singing academies (especially the Berliner Sing-Akademie). It was often given equal billing with Bach’s passions, until finally, in the second half of the 19th century Bach's works became more predominant. With the publication of the present critical new edition (the first since it was first published in 1760), Der Tod Jesu is once again available for sale to the musical public. This makes accessible an epoch-making work which in its time set the standard for settings of the Passion.

  • Foreword (abridged)

Anyone who is interested in Protestant settings of the Passion composed after Johann Sebastian Bach will inevitably encounter a work which, to a greater extent than any other composition in this genre, remained a permanent feature of the German repertoire until well into the 19th century: the Passion “cantata” Der Tod Jesu (The death of Jesus) by Carl Heinrich Graun (1703 or 1704–1759), which was first performed at a Passion concert in the Berlin Cathedral on the 26th March 1755. The libretto was written by Karl Wilhelm Ramler (1725–1798). The work, first published in full score in 1760 by Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf in Leipzig and the source for the present edition, was commissioned by the musically inclined Princess Anna Amalia, the youngest sister of Friedrich II of Prussia (Frederick the Great), whose original intention had evidently been to set the text herself; she did in fact compose the first two movements.

Graun, whose music today has once again begun to be performed more often, was regarded, along with Johann Adolf Hasse and Georg Philipp Telemann, as one of the most well-known and celebrated German composers of his time. He was famous far beyond the boundaries of Berlin, where he worked from 1740
