Haydn, J. M.

Choral music by Johann Michael Haydn

Johann Michael Haydn worked from 1763 at the renowned Archbishop’s court in Salzburg. In the 43 years he worked there, he bridged the gap between early classicism to the Biedermeier style. As required by his official duties, Haydn contributed to almost all of the genres used in the Catholic liturgy: his knowledge of the liturgical function and musical interpretation of religious texts is what distinguishes his church music. Johann Michael Haydn was initially regarded by contemporaries as equal to Joseph Haydn. Only the older brother’s steep rise to become the most important instrumental composer of his day somewhat overshadowed Johann Michael Haydn. In recent years his music has been rediscovered, and he has increasingly been recognized again.
