Carl Maria von Weber
Carl Maria von Weber, one of the most important figures of German Romanticism, is best known for his operas. However, his choral music also deserves great attention. The Missa sancta No. 1 in E flat major is also known as the “Freischütz Mass”, as he composed it in 1818 while working on the opera of the same name. The Missa sancta No. 2 bears the nickname “Jubel-Messe” because it was composed for the festive service on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary of the Saxon royal couple Friedrich August I (1750-1827) and Marie Amalie Auguste (1752-1828) in January 1819. Both masses are easy for amateur choirs to perform.
