Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden
based on the "Stabat Mater" by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, BWV 1083
Bach’s arrangement of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is of great interest and value: although we are familiar with Bach’s performance practice of older works and his reworkings of contemporary compositions, we have no other example apart from this Pergolesi work that demonstrates Bach’s arrangement technique in compositions that are neither traditional nor stylistically related to him.
