From the deep, Lord, cried I, Lord, to thee (Version in A minor)
Cantata for a service of repentance BWV 131, 1707
In the early cantata From the deep, Lord, cried I, Lord, to Thee BWV 131, Bach has the strings, voices and organ all notated in choir pitch, while the winds are notated in low chamber pitch. Bach's score is thus bitonal: the winds are in A minor, all the other parts in G minor. Any transposition of the score to a single key leads to compromises. For example, the choral bass in G minor is very low (up to C), but in A minor it is quite high (up to E2).
Carus offers both variants (G minor: Carus 31.131/00, A minor: Carus 31.131/50). A performance using both sets of voices, maintaining the original tuning disposition, is also possible.
