Madrigals - sheet music editions from Carus
Love and death were the central themes of Italian madrigal compositions from the beginning of the 17th century, characterized by an expressive form with cantabile tone-painting and harmonically complex chord sequences. Heinrich Schütz followed these models with his Italian Madrigals, but also used these forms in his sacred compositions. Schütz’s contemporary Johann Hermann Schein also composed numerous madrigals to sacred texts.
