| 1792-1868Moritz Hauptmann, born in Dresden in 1792, died in Leipzig in 1868. As a composer and music theorist, one of the most influential figures of the first half of the 19th century. From 1811 pupil and later best friend of L. Spohr; in 1812 member of his court orchestra; from 1815 private music teacher in Russia; in 1822 again with Spohr, this time in Kassel; in 1842, on Spohr's and Mendelssohn's recommendation, he became Thomaskantor and music director in Leipzig, shortly afterwards also a teacher at the conservatory; in 1850 co-founder and chairman of the Bach Society.
