Since his earliest childhood, Christoph Schönherr has been fascinated by all things nautical. For his cycle Von Schiffen, Meer und Wind (Of Ships, Sea and Wind), he has brought together verses by different poets that explore the sea in its various guises. The work's selected poems describe the vast ocean, which can fill us with a deep sense of tranquility, but can also bring mortal danger with its storms and destructive waves. Boats, and especially sailing ships, are often associated with freedom, a sense of weightlessness, and security. But if we are caught in a storm at sea, we suddenly find ourselves at the mercy of the forces of nature. We are made painfully aware of our own insignificance in the greater scheme of things.
According to the composer and passionate sailor: “In the five choral songs I attempt to characterize the atmosphere of the texts and the emotions they contain. My experiences at sea, for example in storms or when simply contemplating the motionless water, guided me in my search for a suitable means of musical expression.”

| 1952Christoph Schönherr studierte in Frankfurt am Main zunächst Germanistik und Musikwissenschaft sowie Schulmusik, um anschließend seine Künstlerische Reifeprüfung und Diplom im Fach Chordirigieren (Rilling) abzulegen. An der Hochschule der Künste Berlin promovierte er zum Dr. phil. Bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2015 hatte er eine Professur für Ensemble-Leitung und Musikpädagogik an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg inne.
Seit nunmehr fünf Jahrzehnten leitet er klassische und jazzorientierte Chöre (z.B. Jazzchor der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, Jazzchor der Uni Duisburg, Walddörfer Kantorei, internationaler Festivalchor C.H.O.I.R.). Mit seinen Ensembles erhielt er Einladungen zu Konzerten und Festivals in viele Länder Europas und nach Südamerika. So trat er u.a. beim North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, beim Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, dem Stimmen-Festival in Lörrach, dem Festival der Vier Kulturen in Lodz (Polen) und beim Festival Elbjazz in Hamburg auf.
Er ist ein gefragter Gastdirigent, Workshopleiter und Juror im In- und Ausland. Als Herausgeber hat er die Entwicklung der Jazzchorszene in Deutschland maßgeblich gefördert. In den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten legte er den Fokus seiner Arbeit verstärkt auf das Arrangieren und Komponieren. Nach dem Magnificat und der Missa in tempore incerto schrieb er neben zahlreichen Arrangements das große Oratorium Hiskia, eine Auftragskomposition für den Evangelischen Kirchentag in Hamburg 2013. Kompositionen wie De profundis. Hommage an Franz Schubert und Die mit Schiffen auf dem Meer (nach Psalm 107) zeigen seine große stilistische Bandbreite. Personal details
