Franz von Suppé naît le 18 avril 1819 à Split en Dalmatie ; sa mère est Viennoise, la famille de son père est d’origine belge et s’est établie en Dalmatie en passant par l’Italie – Franz von Suppé avait une grand-mère italienne et était un neveu de Gaetano Donizetti, sa langue maternelle était l’italien. En 1835, alors qu’il achève la version originale de la Missa Dalmatica, Suppé perd son père et s’établit ensuite avec sa mère à Vienne ; il abandonne le droit pour commencer des études de médecine et de technique mais finit par se consacrer entièrement à sa formation de musicien. La carrière de compositeur d’opérettes de Franz von Suppé se déroule parallèlement à son activité de chef d’orchestre dans divers théâtres viennois. Il meurt le 21 mai 1895 à Vienne.

Franz von Suppè was born on 18 April 1819 in Split, Dalmatia; his mother was Viennese, and his father’s family originally came from Belgium, but had come to Dalmatia via Italy. Suppè had an Italian grandmother and was a nephew of Gaetano Donizetti. His mother tongue was Italian. In 1835, the year he completed the original version of the Missa Dalmatica, Suppè lost his father, and thereupon moved with his mother to Vienna. He changed from studying law to medicine and engineering, quickly followed by devoting himself to training as a musician. Franz von Suppè’s career as an operetta composer then developed in conjunction with his work as music director at various Viennese theatres. He died on 21 May 1895 in Vienna.
